News Topical, Digital Desk : A new university was approved at a cabinet meeting chaired by Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Tuesday (April 7). This approval is for the establishment of a new "Uttar Pradesh Forestry and Horticulture University" in Gorakhpur. The cabinet approved the promulgation of the "Uttar Pradesh Forestry and Horticulture University Ordinance, 2026." The university will be built on approximately 50 hectares of land in the Campierganj area at a cost of over ₹491 crore.
The Yogi government also allocated ₹50 crore for the Forestry and Horticulture University in this year's state budget. This fifth university, to be established in Gorakhpur, will offer BSc, MSc, PhD, and diploma courses in a variety of modern disciplines, including forestry, horticulture, wildlife conservation, climate change, natural resource management, agroforestry, fruit and horticulture. Its objectives are to increase forest and green cover, strengthen biodiversity conservation, provide modern training to farmers and students, and promote research in the fields of agriculture and the environment.
Forestry University will be located near Jatayu Conservation Centre.
This decision is expected to provide a new direction for green development, food security, and environmental balance in the state. The establishment of the Forestry and Horticulture University will provide Gorakhpur and the Yogi government with another major achievement in forest and environmental conservation. Previously, the government established the world's first King Vulture (Jatayu) Conservation Center in Gorakhpur. On September 6, 2024, at the inauguration of this King Vulture (Jatayu) Conservation and Breeding Center in Campierganj, CM Yogi announced the opening of a Forestry University adjacent to the Jatayu Conservation Center.
New courses and employment opportunities
Now, it has received cabinet approval. This will be North India's first forestry university. The Gorakhpur Forest Division has identified 50 hectares of land near the Jatayu Conservation Center for the establishment of this university, and preparations have begun. According to Gorakhpur's Divisional Forest Officer (DFO), Vikas Yadav, the university plans to offer degree and diploma courses in forestry, agroforestry, social forestry, and horticulture, in addition to forestry. This will provide ample employment and job opportunities to a large number of youth. He stated that after receiving cabinet approval, preparations for the foundation stone laying ceremony will be expedited.
