Priyanka Gandhi Demands Criminal Prosecution of CEC Gyanesh Kumar Over Voter Roll Row
A major political controversy has erupted over the integrity of India's electoral machinery following explosive allegations of systemic manipulation in voter registration rolls. Addressing media personnel in Wayanad, Kerala, Congress Member of Parliament Priyanka Gandhi Vadra launched a scathing attack on Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar on Thursday, demanding that the poll panel chief face direct criminal prosecution and sedition charges if held responsible for unauthorized deletions and tampering within electoral databases.
The Congress leader's remarks follow investigative media disclosures revealing that Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi had formally raised dissent notes and objections regarding decisions linked to the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter lists at least 14 times over a ten-month span.
Allegations of Electoral Subversion and Constitutional Violations
Interacting with journalists, Priyanka Gandhi characterized any deliberate tampering with the universal adult franchise as an act of treason against the democratic republic. Questioning the institutional immunity enjoyed by top constitutional functionaries, she argued that public servants should not receive statutory shielding if found complicit in subverting democratic mandates. Vadra asserted that manipulating voter rolls and erasing eligible citizens constitutes a direct criminal assault against the Constitution, emphasizing that internal warnings raised by fellow commissioners indicate deliberate negligence rather than procedural oversight. She insisted that if criminal laws apply to ordinary citizens for unlawful acts, electoral authorities presiding over unfair roll revisions must face equivalent legal accountability.
Internal Commission Dissent and ECINet Scrutiny
Amplifying the offensive from New Delhi, Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh targeted the functioning of the Election Commission of India (ECI), alleging severe vulnerabilities within its internal digital framework, specifically the ECINet software platform used for processing voter additions and deletions. Citing the reported dissent from the two sitting Election Commissioners, Ramesh claimed that the credibility, institutional independence, and operational neutrality of the poll panel have been critically eroded.
Highlighting regional ramifications, Ramesh alleged that the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of Goa was forced to send eight separate formal communications to Nirvachan Sadan within a single week, requesting the restoration of verified citizens whose names were abruptly deleted through automated software processes. He stated that despite field-level Electoral Registration Officers (EROs) confirming voter validity, local administrative inputs were disregarded. Ramesh further alleged that procedural roadblocks introduced into the online Form 6 registration window have intentionally suppressed voter enrollment among young adults and first-time Gen Z voters.
