Ashwini Vaishnaw Unveils 4,000-Km High-Speed Rail Map
In a landmark push toward modernizing India’s passenger railway network, Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has hinted that the high-density Bengaluru-Pune route is primed to be developed as the country's next major high-speed bullet train corridor. Speaking during the historic flagging-off ceremony of the maiden Bengaluru-Mumbai Vande Bharat Sleeper Express on Sunday, the minister outlined an expansive expansion roadmap designed to knit together key commercial, industrial, and technology epicenters across Karnataka, Maharashtra, and peninsular India. The proposed alignment is slated to cut through northern Karnataka via Hubballi before terminating in Pune, complementing an ambitious slate of multi-state rail infrastructure projects aimed at dramatically slashing intercity transit times and boosting regional economic integration.
Southern High-Speed Network: 73-Minute Chennai Run & 4,000-Km Bullet Train Blueprint
Outlining the broader vision for rapid transit, Vaishnaw revealed that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has already sanctioned 4,000 route kilometers of dedicated bullet train corridors nationwide, with feasibility frameworks for an additional 3,000 kilometers scheduled for rollout in upcoming phases. A cornerstone of this high-speed master plan is the approved Southern Bullet Train Corridor, an infrastructure network engineered to bridge Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, and Amaravati into a unified mega-economic zone. Highlighting the transformative travel velocity of the network, the minister noted that bullet train operations will reduce the travel time between Bengaluru and Chennai to a mere 73 minutes—effectively creating an interconnected twin-city dynamic—while the transit duration between Bengaluru and Hyderabad will shrink to just two hours and 10 minutes, serving as a powerful economic growth multiplier for southern states.
Vande Bharat Sleeper Debut, Mangaluru Route Launch & BEML's Indigenous Bullet Train
The high-speed rail vision coincides with key additions to the regular passenger fleet, led by the inaugural run of the 16-coach Bengaluru-Mumbai Vande Bharat Sleeper Express—configured with eight motor cars and four trailer cars—which departed Sir M Visvesvaraya Terminal (SMVT) in Bengaluru to reach Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) in Mumbai. Expanding on near-term connectivity, Vaishnaw announced that the Bengaluru-Mangaluru Vande Bharat Express will commence commercial operations within the next few weeks following the successful completion of electrification and track safety validation, while future sleeper variants will link Bengaluru to western hubs via Hubballi. Simultaneously, India's high-speed rail self-reliance achieved a milestone with the ongoing assembly of the country’s first indigenously designed bullet train for the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail (MAHSR) corridor, currently under production at the Bharat Earth Movers Limited (BEML) manufacturing complex in Bengaluru, engineered specifically with world-class safety architecture and custom ergonomics adapted to domestic operating conditions.
