News Topical, Digital Desk : Why Non Smokers Get Lung Cancer: Cancer cases are continuously increasing all over the world. According to a study recently published in the Indian Journal of Medical Research (IJMR), India may see a surge in lung cancer cases by 2030. The report states that the North-East region of the country will be most affected, while the rate of cases is expected to be the fastest among women. According to WHO, lung cancer is a serious public health problem. In the year 2022, around 20 million new cancer cases were reported worldwide and 9.7 million people died. Statistics show that one in every five people may develop cancer at some point in their lifetime.
When does lung cancer occur?
Lung cancer occurs when lung cells begin to grow uncontrollably. These damaged cells clump together to form lumps or tumors, which disrupt the normal functioning of the lungs and gradually affect other organs in the body.
Which part will see the most cases?
According to a new ICMR study, the Northeast is likely to have the highest incidence of lung cancer. Significantly, the incidence of lung cancer among women here is almost equal to that among men. The study observed data from 57 populations across six different regions of the country. Aizawl topped the list, with 35.9 cases per lakh population among men and 33.7 cases per lakh population among women, and the highest mortality rate.
Cases are increasing due to this
According to a TOI report, excessive tobacco use remains a major cause in the region. More than 68 percent of men and about 54 percent of women consume tobacco. However, doctors say the nature of the disease is changing. According to Dr. Saurabh Mittal of the Pulmonology Department at AIIMS, "We are seeing cases of lung cancer even in non-smoking women, which are linked to indoor air pollution, biomass fuels, second-hand smoke, and work-related pollution."
Cases are increasing among men
The study also revealed that districts like Kannur, Kasaragod, and Kollam in South India have higher rates of lung cancer among men, despite relatively low tobacco and alcohol consumption. In the South, Hyderabad and Bengaluru recorded the highest number of cases among women. In North India, Srinagar saw a higher number of cases among men, while Srinagar and Pulwama also saw high rates among women despite lower alcohol consumption. According to the report, in some areas, lung cancer cases are increasing at a rate of about 6.7 percent per year among women and 4.3 percent among men. Thiruvananthapuram saw the sharpest increase in cases among women and Dindigul saw the sharpest increase in cases among men.
