Nasdaq Announces Plan for 23-Hour Daily Trading: Everything Investors Need to Know
In a massive structural shift for global finance, the U.S. Nasdaq Stock Market is preparing to launch a new overnight trading session that will enable continuous trading for approximately 23 hours a day, five days a week. Subject to regulatory approval, the expanded trading framework is slated to commence on December 6, 2026, marking a monumental milestone for international equity markets.
Proposed Schedule and 23-Hour Trading Structure
Under the proposed framework, trading will span from Sunday night through Friday evening. The new overnight session will operate daily from 9:00 p.m. to 4:00 a.m., effectively bridging the gap between existing market closes and openings.
To maintain system integrity and execute daily maintenance, Nasdaq will enforce a mandatory one-hour daily break from 8:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Meanwhile, the exchange's traditional trading hours—encompassing pre-market (4:00 a.m. to 9:30 a.m.), regular market (9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.), and post-market sessions (4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.)—will remain fully intact, with the core 9:30 AM to 4:00 PM window serving as the primary benchmark for price discovery.
Key Changes for Market Participants and Order Rules
While the extended hours open new avenues for global participation, specific operational rules will govern the overnight session:
-
Order Entry Channels: Market participants will utilize dedicated communication channels to route orders during overnight hours.
-
Restricted Order Types: Standard market price orders, along with specialized opening and closing orders, will not be supported during the overnight window.
-
Automatic Expiration: Any orders placed during the overnight session that remain unexecuted by 4:00 a.m. will be automatically canceled, requiring traders to re-enter them when the next trading session begins.
To safeguard against excessive volatility during off-peak hours, Nasdaq plans to implement robust risk controls, including fixed price limits that automatically reject orders submitted outside predetermined thresholds. Additionally, a separate market data system and a comprehensive analytics product named Nasdaq Plus will provide real-time market intelligence throughout the extended hours.
Why Nasdaq is Extending Trading Hours
The strategic move is driven by surging global demand from international investors seeking greater flexibility and direct access to U.S. equities outside traditional Wall Street hours. By accommodating worldwide trading zones—particularly across Asian and European markets—Nasdaq aims to capture heightened liquidity and modernize market infrastructure for the digital era.
