News Topical, Digital Desk : Manoj Bajpayee, who avoids watching his own movies, recently watched the movie 'Inspector Jhande' released on Netflix and the movie 'Jugnuma' which is releasing in theatres on September 12. In a conversation with Priyanka Singh, Manoj expressed his happiness about working with Ram Gopal Varma again.
The story of both 'Inspector Jhande' and the upcoming film 'Jugnuma' is set in the 80s. What is your connection with that decade?
That decade made me the actor that I am today. I left my home to become an actor. I studied, did theatre, lived in Delhi, a major part of my struggle is related to that decade. If those 10 years were not there, I would not have become the artist that I am today. That decade also gave me an understanding of the world, life and theatre.
You said that you don't watch your own films, then how did you watch 'Inspector Jhande' and 'Jugnuma'?
It so happened that 'Inspector Jhande's producer Om Raut asked me to watch the film for five minutes, but I liked the film so much that I sat and watched more than half of the film. When the script of this film came, I thought that the director of the film Chinmay Mandlekar is an actor, a graduate from National School of Drama, so the story will definitely be good. After watching the film, I felt that I had underestimated the script. I watched the entire film 'Jugnuma' because the director of the film wanted me to see whether the corrections he had made in the film were correct or not. I sat very hesitantly to see the technical things.
You have played the role of a police officer many times. What was special about 'Inspector Jhande'?
I play a character. No matter what uniform he wears. What kind of a person he is, where he comes from, what he does, how he lives with his family, that's all that matters. This film is a tribute to Inspector Jhande, who caught the notorious serial killer. People don't know as much about him as they know about the criminal.
Do you have the confidence of Inspector Jhende?
I don't have the confidence like him. He is 88 years old and tells stories of his life openly. He has ideas about everything, filmmaking, writing. With your next film 'Police Station Mein Bhoot', you are going to work with filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma (RGV) after many years. He gave a new direction to your career.
If RGV comes to me and asks me to become a pillar, I will become that too. Doing any film with him is emotional. I am living every moment of my life because of him. In such a big film ('Satya'), he thought of me for such a big character, gave me that role. He continuously made films with a new boy like me. Even today, no one in the industry has the strength to show so much intensity and faith in a new boy. With the film 'Bhoot in Police Station', RGV will prove those people wrong who think that he was lost somewhere. As an artist, I can say that amazing work is going to happen.
