To uncover the clinical truths behind these sudden cardiac events, the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) undertook a comprehensive investigation. The landmark findings, drawn from research across 25 major hospitals, reveal that genetic history, pre-existing medical conditions, smoking habits, and internal blood clotting disorders are the primary triggers driving heart attacks and strokes among the youth.

Inside the ICMR Study: Analyzing Young Patients Across 25 Hospitals

Spearheaded by researchers from the ICMR’s National Institute of Epidemiology, the extensive study evaluated clinical data from 767 patients aged 18 to 45 who survived cardiovascular emergencies due to timely medical intervention.

The breakdown of the patient cohort highlights critical vulnerability brackets:

  • Types of Emergencies: Approximately 56.3 percent (432 patients) had suffered a myocardial infarction (heart attack), while 25.8 percent experienced a stroke caused by blocked cerebral blood flow, combining to represent roughly 82 percent of total cases.

  • Age Vulnerability: The vast majority of victims—614 patients, or about 80.1 percent—fell squarely within the 31 to 45 age group, challenging the assumption that young adults are immune to severe cardiovascular crises.

Identifying High-Risk Triggers: What Amplifies the Danger

The ICMR investigation isolated specific lifestyle and medical risk factors that exponentially increase the likelihood of heart attacks and dangerous blood clots in younger populations:

  • History of Blood Clotting: Patients with a personal history of clotting disorders faced a staggering 60-fold increased risk of a heart attack compared to the general population.

  • Pre-existing Medical Conditions: Underlying health issues multiplied cardiovascular risk by 4.6 times.

  • Tobacco and Smoking: Smokers experienced a 3.5-fold higher risk of heart attacks.

  • Family Medical History: Individuals with a hereditary background of early-age clotting or heart disease carried a 3.3-fold increased risk.

Evaluating the Impact of COVID-19 and Vaccines

Addressing widespread public curiosity, the study also examined post-pandemic health correlations. Researchers discovered that individuals who had previously required hospitalization for severe COVID-19 infections showed a higher propensity for developing blood clots later in life. However, one of the most reassuring takeaways of the research was confirmation that individuals who received COVID-19 vaccines exhibited no additional cardiac harm or elevated risk.
