News Topical, Digital Desk : The Shri Jagannath Temple in Puri, Odisha, is revered far and wide. It is dedicated to Shri Jagannath, a form of Lord Vishnu. It is also famous for its annual Rath Yatra. The Bedi Hanuman Temple, located nearby, is also renowned for its story, which is linked to the Shri Jagannath Temple. Let's learn more about it.

What is the legend (Bedi Hanuman legend)

According to popular legend, once all the gods and goddesses, including humans and Gandharvas, arrived at Puri to visit Lord Jagannath. The Sea God also desired to see Lord Jagannath and entered the temple. This caused considerable problems for the temple and its devotees.

Lord Jagannath then entrusted Hanuman with the responsibility of protecting Puri Dham and stationed him on the seashore. For some time, Hanuman performed his duties admirably, but whenever he heard hymns and chants of Lord Rama, he would immediately rush to that location. Seizing the opportunity, the sea entered the temple.

What is the meaning of shackles

Lord Jagannath (Jagannath Puri legend) then bound Hanuman with iron shackles to prevent the sea from entering the temple and to ensure Hanuman's continued protection of Puri. These shackles should not be interpreted as punishment, but rather represent a bond of duty and devotion. These shackles signify Hanuman's unwavering adherence to his word.

Today, the Bedi Hanuman Temple stands at this location, renowned far and wide. This temple is also known as the Dariya Mahavir Temple. Any devotee who visits the Sri Jagannath Temple in Puri is also a sure bet.
