Amitabh, Rekha, and Aamir Khan’s ‘Time Machine’ Was Shelved After 75% Completion

Bollywood history is filled with ambitious concepts that were conceived, scripted, and cast, only to gather dust in pre-production. However, cases where a movie is nearly complete yet fails to secure a theatrical release are exceptionally rare. One of the most famous examples in Indian cinema is the 1992 science-fiction project titled Time Machine. Directed by Shekhar Kapur, the film boasted a stellar star cast including Aamir Khan, Rekha, Raveena Tandon, Naseeruddin Shah, Gulshan Grover, and a special appearance by megastar Amitabh Bachchan. Despite having nearly three-quarters of its shooting wrapped up, the film remained unreleased.

Inspired by 'Back to the Future': The Mind-Bending Plot

Following the landmark success of his 1987 sci-fi classic Mr. India, director Shekhar Kapur set out to create a Indian adaptation of Hollywood’s iconic time-travel hit Back to the Future. Scripted by Karan Razdan, the story revolved around an orphan youth, played by Aamir Khan, who invents a time machine to travel back into the past and meet his deceased parents, played by Rekha and Naseeruddin Shah. The narrative involved time-bending journeys across eras, including an adventurous detour into the Mahabharata age. In a meta-cinematic sequence, Aamir’s character also traveled back to the 1960s, where he encountered a struggling young actor named Amitabh Bachchan.

Star-Studded Reunions and Nostalgic Memories

The project brought together major contemporary and veteran actors of the era. Aamir Khan was paired opposite Raveena Tandon, while veteran stars Rekha and Naseeruddin Shah anchored the primary timeline. The film also provided a unique platform for Amitabh Bachchan and Rekha to be part of the same cinematic venture. During a media interaction marking a milestone anniversary for Lagaan, Aamir Khan fondly reminisced about working on the project while sharing the stage with Rekha, bringing back memories of the ambitious sci-fi drama that was ahead of its time for early 1990s Indian cinema.

Financial Troubles and Revival Attempts: Why the Film Was Shelved

Despite executing approximately 75% of the shoot, the project hit a dead end due to severe financial constraints during production. The situation escalated when director Shekhar Kapur moved to the United States to pursue international projects, causing the production schedule to stall permanently. Writer Karan Razdan later disclosed that he made several efforts over the years to revive Time Machine with prominent producers such as Karan Johar, Firoz Nadiadwala, Manmohan Shetty, and Ramesh Taurani. However, due to budget requirements and shifting star schedules, the film was never completed, leaving Time Machine as one of Bollywood’s most tantalizing "what-if" stories.
