Vedanta Doubles South Africa Zinc Output With $600M Gamsberg Project

In a landmark step to bolster its international industrial footprint and capture escalating global demand for critical industrial metals, natural resources conglomerate Vedanta Limited has formally doubled its operational zinc production capacity in South Africa to 500,000 tonnes per annum. The operational milestone was achieved following the successful commissioning of Phase 2 at the flagship Gamsberg Mine located in South Africa's Northern Cape province, backed by a strategic capital outlay of approximately $600 million. South African President Cyril Ramaphosa and Vedanta Director Priya Agarwal Hebbar officially inaugurated the expanded processing facility on October 18, 2026, marking the operationalization of a key commitment originally pledged during the 2018 South Africa Investment Conference, where Vedanta vowed to inject 21 billion rand (roughly $1.5 billion) into the African nation’s extractive economy.

Gamsberg Phase 2 and the Global 3-Million-Tonne Zinc Vision

The commissioning of Gamsberg Phase 2 serves as a cornerstone for Vedanta’s long-term strategic ambition to scale combined annual zinc production across its Indian and African facilities to 3 million tonnes. Under this integrated global framework, the conglomerate's domestic subsidiary, Hindustan Zinc Limited, is slated to deliver 2 million tonnes annually, while Vedanta Zinc International (VZI) will ramp up its output to supply the remaining 1 million tonnes from its African mining assets. As an indispensable chemical agent in the galvanization process—shielding structural steel from oxidation and environmental degradation—zinc remains in elevated demand across expanding international infrastructure projects, automotive manufacturing lines, and specialized industrial sectors. By accelerating output at Gamsberg, Vedanta is positioning its supply lines to meet the compounding consumption needs of modern engineering and clean-energy infrastructure worldwide.

Community Investments and Monday Dalal Street Stock Outlook

Beyond heavy mine infrastructure, Vedanta’s footprint in the Northern Cape encompasses significant socio-economic development initiatives. Since acquiring Vedanta Zinc International in 2011, the mining major has committed approximately $20 million toward localized corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives across South Africa, financing public healthcare infrastructure, quality schooling, technical employment training, essential municipal utilities, and grassroots sports programs that collectively benefit more than 32,000 local community members each year. With the Gamsberg Phase 2 expansion officially coming online over the weekend, equity analysts and institutional investors on Dalal Street are expected to track Vedanta Limited shares closely during tomorrow's opening trading session. While forward price trajectories will depend on broader equity benchmarks and base metal commodity fluctuations, the substantial capacity increase strengthens the group's medium-term earnings visibility and cements its standing among the world’s lowest-cost primary zinc producers.
