Every year, Pitru Paksha falls from Bhadrapada Purnima Tithi to Amavasya Tithi. During this period, Tarpan and Pinddaan are performed for the ancestors. Pitru Paksha ends on Sarvapitru Amavasya. This year, Pitru Paksha is starting from 18th September. In Pitru Paksha ( Pitru Paksha 2024 ), Tarpan and Pinddaan are performed for the ancestors every day.

It is contained in Garuda Purana that by performing tarpan and pinddaan of ancestors during Pitru Paksha, ancestors of three generations attain salvation. During Pitru Paksha, many works including Manglik are prohibited. Ignoring them makes the ancestors unhappy (angry). This has a bad effect on the life of a particular person. A person has to face a lot of difficulties in life. Therefore, do not make these mistakes even by mistake during Pitru Paksha . Let us know what to do and what not to do during Pitru Paksha-

What not to do during Pitru Paksha

• It is mentioned in Garuda Purana that one should not consume non-vegetarian food during Pitru Paksha. Also, one should not consume alcohol. In simple words, do not consume meat and alcohol during Pitru Paksha. Ignoring this brings the evil eye of ancestors on the person.
• During Pitru Paksha, do not consume vegetables, sattu, gram dal, gram, gram flour etc. Do not forget to consume vegetables and sattu. Apart from this, also avoid lentils, horse gram dal, carrots, radish etc.  
• Do not insult the elders of the house. Do not hurt anyone in the family nor harm their dignity. Also, do not harass animals and birds.
• Do not shop during Pitru Paksha and do not wear new coloured clothes. Do not start any auspicious work during this Paksha. By doing this, a person suffers from Pitru Dosh.

what to do in pitrupaksha

• During Pitru Paksha, after taking bath and meditation, face south and offer water to the ancestors. After this, offer food to the ancestors.
• Recite Pitru Chalisa and chant Pitru Mantras during Pitru Paksha .
• During Pitru Paksha, light a mustard oil lamp every evening on the terrace facing south.
• Follow the celibacy rules during Pitru Paksha. Also, serve the needy.
• During Pitru Paksha, donate food, water and money daily according to your financial status.
• Feed animals and birds every day during Pitru Paksha. You can also feed birds on your rooftop.
