Indigenous Gene Therapy: India has achieved a great success in the fight against cancer. Actually, Indian scientists have developed gene therapy, which has brought a new ray of hope for patients suffering from blood cancer. The name of this therapy is CAR-T cell therapy, and it has the power to give a new life to cancer patients.

The best thing is that this therapy is not very expensive, so that more and more people can benefit from it. Recently, the results of the tests of this therapy have been published in a famous medical journal, which are very encouraging. Positive effects of this therapy have been seen in 73 percent of blood cancer patients. According to a clinical trial published in the journal 'Lancet Hematology', this therapy has proved effective in 73% of cases of blood cancer. This therapy is considered especially effective for patients of leukemia (bone marrow cancer) and lymphoma (lymphatic system cancer).

This success is also being considered an important achievement for "Make in India" and "Atmanirbhar Bharat". This therapy has been developed by joint efforts of IIT-Bombay, Tata Memorial Hospital and Immunoact.

How does this therapy work?

  • CAR-T cell therapy alters a patient’s T-cells (immune cells) through special gene editing, allowing them to recognise and destroy cancer cells.
  • This technique helps fight cancer by strengthening the body's natural immunity and also reduces the chances of recurrence of the disease.

Cheaper and more effective than other therapies

This therapy is ten times cheaper than other CD19 CAR-T cell therapies available worldwide.

  • Its cost is only 30,000 US dollars (about 26 lakh rupees), whereas in other countries this therapy costs crores.
  • This could also be a hope for patients in low and middle-income countries.

How was the clinical trial conducted?

  • Phase 1: Trial was conducted on 14 patients above 18 years of age.
  • Second Phase: This therapy was given to 50 patients above 15 years of age.

Of the total 64 patients included in the study, positive effects were seen in 73%.

What do scientists say?

Professor Rahul Purwar of IIT Bombay says that this therapy can give a second chance of life to those patients on whom other treatments do not work.

Dr. Hasmukh Jain, Professor at Tata Memorial Hospital, said that this therapy can be cheap and remain effective for a long time.

CAR-T cell therapy developed in India can bring a revolutionary change in the treatment of blood cancer. Its positive results and affordable price make it very important at the global level as well. This therapy will not only give a new life to blood cancer patients but will also help in making India a leader in the field of biotechnology.
