Odisha Commissionerate Police on Sunday busted an organised ATM robbery gang. Two accused have been arrested after an encounter between police and criminals in Kesura area of Baragada police station area of Bhubaneswar. During the encounter, one of the accused sustained bullet injuries and has been admitted to a hospital.
The police had received information that some criminals were carrying out ATM robbery incidents in the city. When the police tried to nab the accused, they tried to escape. During this, there was a shootout between the police and the criminals. In this encounter, one of the accused Deepak Kumar, who is a resident of Nawada district of Bihar, was injured. The police bullet hit his left leg, after which he was admitted to AIIMS Bhubaneswar.
The accused are from Bihar and Jharkhand
Apart from Deepak Kumar, the police have arrested another accused Abhishek Kumar Singh, who is a resident of Chatra district of Jharkhand. According to the Police Commissioner, this gang was involved in two cases in Bihar, one in Jharkhand and four in Odisha. In Odisha, two cases each are registered against them in Puri and Bhubaneswar.
Weapons recovered from the accused
The police recovered a country-made 7.65 mm semi-automatic pistol, one live cartridge, two empty cartridges, a white Tata Harrier car, ₹12,000 cash, three mobile phones, ATM cards of 12 different customers, a knife and other incriminating items from the accused.
They used to rob by applying glue
This gang used to tamper with ATM machines in a very cunning manner. It can be clearly seen in the CCTV video that these criminals first used to apply glue in the ATM card slot, due to which the customer's card got stuck in it. After this, these people used to paste a fake mobile number near the ATM, which was shown as the bank's helpline number. When a customer called on that number after the card got stuck, the accused would cleverly obtain his ATM PIN and other banking information. Later, these people would take out the card with the help of a knife and withdraw money from the customer's account.
