Bangladesh's ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina termed the violence in Bangladesh last month as a terrorist attack. Breaking her silence for the first time after leaving office on August 5, Hasina said in a statement on Tuesday, "Many people were killed in the name of revolution". Those involved in "terrorist acts", murders and barbarism should be identified. The culprits should be punished. I want justice.

Sheikh Hasina's statement was released by her son Sajeeb Wazed Zayed on Twitter on Tuesday. This statement came hours after a case was registered against Hasina for the murder of a grocery shop owner during last month's violent clashes.

Sheikh Hasina is in India

It is noteworthy that after several weeks of protests, Hasina resigned last week and went to India. Nearly 300 people were killed in the violence. In a statement posted in Bengali on the x handle by Hasina's son Sajeeb Wazed Jay, Hasina said that many students, teachers, policemen, journalists, leaders and activists of her Awami League and common people lost their lives in the violence and chaos since July.

Recalling the killing of her family members on August 15, 1975, Hasina said, "I sympathise with those like me who are living with the pain of losing their loved ones. I demand a proper investigation to identify and punish those involved in these killings and terror acts."

Hasina said- Observe 15th August as National Mourning Day

On the burning of the Bangabandhu Museum during the violence, Hasina said, "Memory and inspiration were burnt to ashes. It was an insult to someone under whose leadership we became an independent nation. I demand justice for this act from the countrymen. I appeal to observe August 15 as a national day of mourning."

Soon after Hasina resigned and left the country, angry mobs set the museum on fire. The museum was the personal residence of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, where he was assassinated along with his family members in a military coup. Hasina, her two children and her younger sister Sheikh Rehana survived the attack as she was in Germany.

Bangladesh cancels national holiday on August 15

The interim government of Bangladesh cancelled the national holiday on 15 August. The cancellation of the holiday on 15 August was approved in the Advisory Council meeting. The country's founder and Hasina's father Sheikh Mujiburahman was assassinated on 15 August. Therefore, there was a holiday on this day in Bangladesh on the occasion of mourning day.

Some influential people of the Awami League government were given shelter: Army Chief

Bangladesh Army chief General Waqar-uz-Zaman on Tuesday said he has given shelter to some influential people of the ousted Awami League government to protect them from attacks.

"If there is any allegation against them, any case is filed, they will be punished. But of course we don't want any attack or extrajudicial action against them," the army chief said in Rajshahi cantonment, according to the Daily Star newspaper. He said a total of 30 attacks have taken place on minorities in 20 districts. He said, "We are investigating the incidents. We will punish the culprits."
