Hindu Temple Attacked: Windows Smashed as Miscreants Target Swaminarayan Mandir
In an alarming incident of religious vandalism, a Hindu house of worship located in the Greater Cleveland area of Ohio was attacked on Friday afternoon. Miscreants targeted the Shri Swaminarayan Hindu Temple Vadtaldham, located in Richmond Heights, pelting heavy construction bricks directly at the building. The violent strike caused heavy damage, completely shattering several structural glass windows while temple priests and multiple congregation members were present inside the sanctuary.
Narrow Escape for Devotees as Bricks Shatter Glass Panels
According to the Coalition of Hindus of North America (CoHNA), the physical assault unfolded in broad daylight, spreading panic among community members gathered for daily worship. The bricks smashed through perimeter window glass, sending dangerous shards across the interior floor. Fortunately, no direct casualties or severe bodily injuries were officially reported among the clergy or visitors inside. While physical harm was averted, the brazen attack has sent shockwaves through the local Indian-American diaspora residing across northern Ohio.
CoHNA Urges Richmond Heights Mayor Kim Thomas to Take Decisive Action
Condemning the targeted hostility in the strongest terms, advocacy organization CoHNA called upon Richmond Heights Mayor Kim Thomas and regional police chiefs to publicly denounce the bigotry and deploy dedicated investigative resources to apprehend the perpetrators. Law enforcement agencies have registered an active inquiry into the property destruction, though municipal authorities have yet to identify or detain any named suspects in connection with the assault.
Attack Coincides with Hindu Heritage Month and Navratri Preparations
Community leaders emphasized that the assault carries disturbing symbolic weight, arriving precisely as North American Hindus commence the annual celebrations of Hindu Heritage Month and finalize arrangements for the upcoming festival of Navratri. The incident adds to an unsettling sequence of attacks directed at Hindu spiritual spaces across the United States over recent years, including the defacement of the SMVS Swaminarayan Mandir in Newark, California in December 2023, the vandalism of BAPS temples in Melville, New York and Sacramento, California in September 2024, and hateful graffiti targeting the BAPS sanctuary in Chino Hills, California in March 2025. The escalating frequency of such bias-motivated episodes has deepened security anxieties across Hindu religious establishments nationwide.
