Sanjay Dutt Recalls Jail Ordeal, Anda Cell & Sunil Dutt's Tears
Bollywood star Sanjay Dutt appeared as a special guest on Shekhar Suman's talk show, Shekhar Tonight, offering a deeply personal reflection on his turbulent life, high-profile career milestones, and time spent behind bars. During the conversation, the actor spoke candidly about surviving the harsh realities of confinement, revealing that deliberate efforts were made to break his mental resolve inside prison walls. Despite enduring prolonged isolation in high-security facilities, Dutt maintained that he never allowed despair to defeat him, confronting adverse circumstances with resilience even when his world felt upended.
Sunil Dutt's Heartbreak: 'What Are You Doing to My Son'
Sharing an emotional memory that remains etched in his memory, Dutt described his father, legendary actor and parliamentarian Sunil Dutt's visceral reaction when law enforcement officers placed him in handcuffs for the first time. The veteran icon broke down in tears of disbelief, confronting the police officers over the treatment being meted out to his son. Dutt recalled hugging his father tightly to comfort him, urging him not to let the sight of handcuffs distress him and reassuring him that it was merely part of a legal process. While projecting inner strength to comfort his father, the actor confessed that witnessing his father's devastation was inwardly agonizing.
Solitary Isolation in the Anda Cell: Taunts Over Lost Luxury
Addressing the severe psychological conditions of detention, Shekhar Suman highlighted how the actor was confined to an egg-shaped high-security isolation ward known as the 'anda cell' without losing his mental balance. When asked if the despair ever pushed him toward thoughts of ending his life, Dutt firmly answered that suicide never crossed his mind. Instead, he observed that prison authorities assumed stripping away his celebrity privileges and lavish lifestyle would shatter him. When an official mockingly pointed out that he would no longer have access to premium cigarettes and asked how he would cope, Dutt casually responded that beedis would suffice, neutralizing attempts to psychologically disarm him.
Legal Journey: The 1993 Case, Arms Act Conviction, and Ultimate Release
Sanjay Dutt was originally taken into custody in April 1993 under the Terrorist and Disruptive Activities (Prevention) Act (TADA) and the Arms Act in connection with the 1993 Mumbai serial blasts case. Having spent around 18 months as an undertrial, he was cleared of terrorism charges by a designated TADA court in 2007 but convicted under the Arms Act for unauthorized possession of weapons, receiving a six-year sentence. The Supreme Court of India subsequently reduced the sentence to five years in 2013, which he completed at Pune's Yerwada Central Jail before his final release in 2016. Dutt's lineage connects back to cinematic and political royalty—his mother was legendary screen icon Nargis Dutt, while his father Sunil Dutt was a revered actor and a five-time Member of Parliament representing the Mumbai North West constituency.
