Ayatollah Khamenei Funeral: Iran Sends Heartfelt Message to India
In a powerful display of international diplomacy and enduring bilateral ties, Iran has officially extended its heartfelt gratitude to the Indian government and its citizens. This comes after a high-level Indian delegation traveled to Tehran to participate in the final farewell and state funeral of Iran's late Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Sayyed Ali Khamenei, on Monday, July 6, 2026.
A Strong Symbol of India-Iran Friendship
The Iranian Embassy in New Delhi quickly took to the social media platform X (formerly Twitter) to issue a detailed statement of appreciation. The embassy described the presence of Indian political leaders, intellectuals, and scholars as a true symbol of mutual respect, compassion, and long-standing cultural friendship between the two nations.
According to the official post, the Iranian people will always remember the solidarity India showcased during this profound period of national mourning. The embassy emphasized that this gesture lays a robust foundation for strengthening India-Iran relations even further in the coming years.
Who Represented India at the Funeral?
India ensured a diverse and high-ranking representation at the historic event in Tehran. The official delegation was prominently led by Bihar Governor Lieutenant General (Retired) Syed Ata Hasnain and Minister of State for External Affairs Pabitra Margherita.
Beyond the official state representatives, several prominent Indian political figures also traveled to pay their respects. This included senior Congress leader Salman Khurshid and People's Democratic Party (PDP) chief and former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti. Highlighting India's secular fabric, the delegation was accompanied by respected religious leaders representing the Hindu, Muslim, Sikh, and Christian communities.
Millions Gather in Tehran for the Final Farewell
The massive funeral procession for Ayatollah Ali Khamenei commenced in the heart of Tehran early Monday morning. According to Iran's state-run Press TV, the procession was estimated to last between 10 to 12 hours, drawing millions of mourners to the streets in what is being recorded as one of the largest public gatherings in Iran's modern history.
The late Supreme Leader, who reportedly lost his life during US and Israeli military strikes in Tehran earlier in February, was carried on a specially decorated vehicle. His coffin was wrapped in the Iranian national flag. As the vehicle slowly navigated through the dense crowds, thousands of emotional mourners attempted to touch the coffin or toss their scarves toward it to seek final blessings. To protect the massive gathering from the sweltering heat, security forces continuously sprayed water over the crowds while urging citizens to maintain peace and avoid stampedes.
The Final Journey to Mashhad
Revolutionary Guard General Hassan Hassanzadeh confirmed that the massive procession successfully navigated through Tehran's primary streets before arriving at the Mehrabad International Airport. From there, Ayatollah Khamenei’s body is scheduled to be flown to his birthplace, Mashhad. He will be laid to rest at the revered shrine of Imam Reza.
To ensure the smooth execution of these massive state ceremonies, the Iranian government has suspended numerous public activities, halted standard commercial flights, and heavily secured the airspace, marking a solemn end to an era in Iranian history.
