Protests in Iran

Reza Pahlavi, son of Iran's deposed Shah (king), has appealed to security forces to "stand with the people." Internet shutdowns and phone lines in Iran have made monitoring the protests from abroad more difficult.

Online videos sent from Iran reportedly showed protesters gathering in the Punak area of northern Tehran, where authorities had closed roads and demonstrators were waving burning mobile phones.

Why did the demonstration begin?

The protests began on December 28 after the Iranian currency, the rial, plummeted to trade at more than 1.4 million to $1, as the country's economy grapples with international sanctions.

Gradually, these protests intensified and turned into demands directly challenging Iran's religious government.
