Zero Tolerance for Smog: UP Chief Secretary Tightens Noose on NCR Air Pollution Under CM Yogi's Directive
As alarming spikes in air quality levels threaten the National Capital Region (NCR), Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has adopted a zero-tolerance approach toward environmental degradation, prompting top state officials to aggressively tighten pollution-control measures. In a high-level review meeting chaired by the Chief Secretary, the administration laid out a comprehensive, multi-departmental action plan focusing on strict stubble management protocols, rigorous industrial inspections, and the rapid expansion of electric vehicle (EV) public infrastructure to safeguard public health and restore clean air across the region.
Aggressive Stubble Management and Agricultural Monitoring
To prevent seasonal crop residue burning—a major contributor to regional air degradation—the state administration has ordered immediate action to ensure farmers have seamless access to necessary agricultural machinery and balers. Addressing resource shortages, officials were instructed to expedite pending tender processes without delay. Furthermore, field-level monitoring is being drastically ramped up to educate cultivators on sustainable residue management, while ensuring that existing agricultural equipment is utilized to its absolute maximum capacity across rural districts.
Strict Crackdown on Polluting Industries and Dust Control
Taking direct aim at industrial emissions, the government has mandated regular, unannounced inspections of manufacturing units to ensure strict compliance with environmental norms and pollution standards. Officials failing to enforce penalties against non-compliant factories will face immediate accountability. Simultaneously, urban development authorities have been directed to prioritize critical road infrastructure projects, mandating timely tenders for road dust suppression, pothole repairs, and sidewalk restorations across municipal jurisdictions to curb airborne particulate matter.
Expanding EV Infrastructure and Streamlining Nodal Coordination
As part of the long-term green transition, the Chief Secretary ordered the accelerated procurement process for electric city buses alongside the swift identification of strategic locations for new EV charging stations in coordination with NEDA. To guarantee seamless execution, every concerned government department has been instructed to appoint a dedicated nodal officer and maintain precise, real-time data logs on the official Pawan portal. By setting strict monthly targets, conducting public awareness campaigns, and enforcing end-to-end vehicle seizure protocols, the Uttar Pradesh government is leaving no stone unturned in its mission to combat NCR air pollution.
