Yogi Govt’s Mass Marriage Drive Unites 28,833 Couples with ₹1 Lakh Grant

The Uttar Pradesh government, spearheaded by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, has accelerated its flagship mass marriage initiative to provide dignified, debt-free matrimonial ceremonies for daughters from economically weaker sections across the state. Managed under the aegis of the Social Welfare Department, the Chief Minister’s Mass Marriage Scheme (Mukhyamantri Samuhik Vivah Yojana) has successfully solemnized the weddings of 28,833 couples across urban and rural civic jurisdictions so far in the financial year 2026-27. Aiming to dismantle social divisions, combat dowry culture, and relieve impoverished households from crushing private moneylender debts, the state administration has locked in an ambitious target of solemnizing 72,540 marriages within the ongoing fiscal year, turning community marriage pandals into centers of social harmony and equitable public welfare.

1.16 Lakh Applications and District Standings: Hardoi and Sitapur Lead the State

Detailing the rapid statewide expansion of the program, Sanjeev Singh, Director of the Social Welfare Department, confirmed that administrative portals have logged a staggering 1,16,668 applications across all 75 districts of Uttar Pradesh in FY 2026-27. Following rigorous multi-tiered administrative screenings, 34,845 applications have formally received clearance, while 11,679 submissions were disqualified after failing to meet designated income and residency benchmarks. A granular evaluation of district-level metrics reveals that Hardoi holds the premier position in the state by solemnizing 1,385 marriages, closely trailed by Sitapur with 1,335 couples, Pilibhit with 1,271 weddings, and Azamgarh facilitating 1,242 ceremonies, highlighting deep administrative penetration across both central and eastern Awadh, Rohilkhand, and Purvanchal belts.

₹1 Lakh Financial Package and Digital Scrutiny: Direct Benefit Transfers via e-KYC

Under the scheme's comprehensive welfare architecture, the state allocates a total financial assistance package of ₹1,00,000 for every enrolled couple to ensure a secure transition into married life. From this designated corpus, a direct financial grant of ₹64,000 is transferred directly into the bank account of the bride to assist in establishing her new household, while ₹21,000 is utilized to provide essential marital gift hampers—including traditional bridal attire, silver ornaments, utensils, and household items—with the remaining ₹15,000 allocated toward pandal logistics, catering, and ceremonial arrangements. To eliminate middlemen, systemic corruption, and ghost beneficiaries, the welfare department mandates strict technological guardrails: applicant credentials are authenticated using real-time biometric e-KYC protocols, income and caste documentation undergo digital cross-verification through the state's centralized e-District database, and all monetary disbursements are executed via secure Aadhaar-enabled bank payment channels.
