Lucknow SGPGI to Build India’s Second-Largest 80-Bed Advanced Burn Unit

In a landmark advancement for trauma care and critical health infrastructure across Northern and Eastern India, the Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGIMS) in Lucknow is preparing to construct an ultra-modern, 80-bed Advanced Burn Unit at an estimated cost of ₹99 crore. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath will formally lay the foundation stone for this six-story specialized medical facility immediately after Diwali, setting in motion an ambitious 18-month construction timeline. Once commissioned, this cutting-edge complex will stand as the single largest specialized burn treatment facility in Uttar Pradesh and the second-largest in India, surpassed in scale only by the 107-bed burn care center at AIIMS Delhi’s Safdarjung Hospital. Engineered to bridge a critical deficit in tertiary emergency care, the dedicated center will deliver prompt, high-precision treatment to critically burned patients across Lucknow, adjoining districts, and the extensive Purvanchal belt of Eastern Uttar Pradesh who previously faced grueling inter-state transit to the national capital.

Advanced Infrastructure: 80 Specialized Burn Beds and an Integrated 60-Bed Critical Care Hub

Designed to operate under the expert supervision of SGPGI’s Department of Plastic Surgery, the state-approved blueprint addresses the acute medical complexities associated with severe thermal wounds, extensive deep tissue injuries, and fatal post-burn shock. According to SGPGI Director Prof. Dr. R.K. Dhiman, the dedicated project received formal governmental clearance following directives from Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath to establish specialized, timely interventions for burn trauma. Positioned adjacent to the institute's Advanced Pediatric Center, the upcoming six-story complex will not only house 80 specialized burn beds but will also integrate a dedicated 60-bed Critical Care Unit (CCU) under the same roof. This integrated layout guarantees that patients suffering from multiple organ distress, septic complications, or extensive burn percentages receive continuous, life-saving critical care support alongside targeted surgical treatments without requiring hazardous inter-departmental transfers.

Center of Excellence: Modular OTs, Strict Infection Controls, and Cutting-Edge Reconstructive Surgery

Beyond inpatient clinical capacity, the facility is envisioned to function as a national Center of Excellence dedicated to advanced clinical research, surgical innovation, and high-level training for plastic surgeons, critical care specialists, and nursing professionals. Recognizing that septic infections remain the primary threat to burn victims, the building will incorporate a high-efficiency specialized Air Handling Unit (AHU) network that regulates micro-climates, maintains positive pressure, and minimizes airborne microbial contamination across patient suites. The center will feature dedicated modular operating theaters tailored for urgent escharotomy, deep debridement, precision wound sterilization, and complex skin grafting procedures. Patients will have immediate access to complete multi-disciplinary rehabilitation services—including acute physiotherapy, therapeutic splinting, and advanced aesthetic and functional reconstructive surgeries—supported by fully integrated, in-house radiology suites and pathology testing laboratories to deliver all diagnostic and therapeutic care within a unified, sterile medical sanctuary.
