Yogi Govt's Big Gift: Free Roadways Bus Travel for Women Above 60 Under Ahilyabai Yojana

In a major welfare move fulfilling a key electoral promise, the Uttar Pradesh government led by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has approved the implementation of the Lokmata Ahilyabai Matrishakti Yojana. During a cabinet meeting chaired by the Chief Minister at Lok Bhavan, the administration cleared a total of 24 out of 27 proposals, highlighted by the decision to offer completely free travel facilities on state roadways buses for senior women aged 60 and above.

Empowering Senior Women Across Uttar Pradesh

With the population of women above 60 years in Uttar Pradesh exceeding one crore, government estimates project that more than 88,000 senior women will benefit from this initiative daily. The scheme will incur an estimated financial expenditure of approximately ₹22.55 crore per month for the state exchequer.

This policy delivers direct financial relief to elderly women, particularly those residing in rural areas and smaller towns where public transport is essential for daily commuting, healthcare visits, family obligations, and social connectivity. By removing the burden of transport fares, the Yogi administration aims to enhance mobility and independence for senior female citizens.

Implementation Through Smart Cards and Current Guidelines

To ensure the seamless execution of the scheme and accurate tracking of beneficiaries, the Uttar Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation will issue special smart cards to eligible senior women in due course. Meanwhile, during the transitional phase, beneficiaries can avail of free travel by presenting valid identification documents such as a voter ID card or other government-approved identification.

State Transport Minister Dayashankar Singh noted that while the 2011 census recorded approximately 81 lakh women above 60 years in the state, current estimates place the figure well above one crore. Fulfilling the commitment made in the BJP's prior election manifesto, this visionary step reinforces the government's focus on women's welfare, social security, and inclusive public infrastructure.
