Ganga Flood Threat Looms Over Kannauj: Floodwaters Inundate Kasimpur and Bakhsipurva as Narora Dam Releases More Water
The rising water levels of the Ganges River have triggered widespread alarm among residents living in the low-lying coastal areas of Kannauj. With the river swelling rapidly, floodwaters have directly entered residential areas in Kasimpur and Bakhsipurva villages, completely submerging connecting roads and forcing families to evacuate. Villagers are urgently transporting household belongings to higher ground using boats, while many displaced residents have set up temporary tin tents along elevated paths. The administrative machinery has been mobilized, with local disaster response teams deployed to monitor the evolving flood situation closely.
Danger Mark Nearing as Narora Dam Releases Over 1.1 Lakh Cusecs of Water
According to official data recorded on Wednesday at Mehndi Ghat, the Ganges water level reached 125.760 meters—standing a mere 21 cm below the danger mark of 125.970 meters—and is steadily rising at a rate of 4 cm every 10 hours. Following an initial discharge of 105,633 cusecs from the Narora Dam earlier in the week, an additional 111,969 cusecs of water were released on Wednesday. District authorities warn that the impact of this latest discharge will hit the Katra region by Friday morning, potentially worsening the flood crisis. District Magistrate Ashutosh Mohan Agnihotri confirmed that administrative teams are actively camping in the affected zones to provide immediate relief and assistance to impacted families.
Rivers Merge and Cattle Shelters Flooded: 150 Animals Relocated to Safety
The escalating water volume has caused the Ganges and Kali rivers to merge, inundating extensive tracts of low-lying terrain and cutting off transportation routes. The culvert connecting Chaura Chandpur and Gumtia villages has been entirely submerged, disrupting local traffic, while the Gumtia village cremation ground is currently underwater. Highlighting the immediate administrative response, Chaura Chandpur village administrator Murari Yadav noted that about two and a half feet of water flooded the local cowshed, prompting the urgent relocation of approximately 150 cattle to a temporary shelter near Bandgipir, complete with emergency green fodder arrangements.
Administration Alerts Public Amid Safety Concerns and Infrastructure Damages
With roads and culverts submerged, local authorities have issued strict public advisories urging residents, particularly children, to stay away from overflowing waters and dangerous currents, while villagers have requested barricades and police deployment to prevent accidents. In addition to the riverine flooding, continuous seasonal rains have caused infrastructural damage across the district; notably, a mud house belonging to Ashwani Kumar in Miyaganj collapsed during downpours. Following an appeal by his wife, Guddi, for housing assistance under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana, the Minister of State for Social Welfare has directed the SDM Sadar to conduct an immediate site inspection and initiate rehabilitation measures.
