Akhilesh Yadav’s ‘PDA Rath Yatra’ Strategy Sparks Political Firestorm in UP

As the political climate in Uttar Pradesh heats up ahead of the 2027 Assembly Elections, Samajwadi Party (SP) President Akhilesh Yadav is gearing up for a state-wide mobilization campaign. Starting in the first week of September, the ‘Samajwadi PDA Rath Yatra’ aims to traverse every district and assembly constituency, signaling a high-stakes bid to challenge the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). With party insiders hinting that the journey may kick off from a prominent Hindu religious site, the initiative has already become a focal point of intense political maneuvering and heated debate.

The Strategic Pivot to Religious Sites

The Samajwadi Party’s decision to potentially integrate religious sites into its yatra route is being viewed as a calculated effort to reclaim ground in the cultural discourse. Party spokesperson Fakhrul Hasan Chand confirmed that while the final starting point remains at the discretion of the National President, the yatra is designed to connect with religious hubs across all faiths. The SP is leveraging this campaign to target the BJP on sensitive issues, including allegations regarding the management of offerings at the Ram Temple, an issue they claim is drawing widespread criticism even from devoted followers of Lord Ram.

BJP’s Retort: "Performance Over Symbols"

The proposed Rath Yatra has drawn immediate and sharp criticism from the state government. Uttar Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya dismissed the political efficacy of such yatras, asserting that the public is no longer swayed by symbolic gestures. Addressing the SP’s plans, Maurya remarked, "Whether it’s a Rath Yatra, Padayatra, or a bicycle yatra, the public decides based on governance and leadership." He further claimed that the Samajwadi Party’s political base is in a state of terminal decline, while the BJP remains the bedrock of public trust. Maurya confidently declared that the SP would be "wiped out" in the 2027 elections, paving the way for a decisive BJP return.

A Quest for a 2012-Style Comeback

For the Samajwadi Party, the Yatra is rooted in historical optimism. Supporters frequently recall Akhilesh Yadav’s successful 2011 Rath Yatra, which acted as a catalyst for the SP’s resounding victory and the formation of their government in 2012. Party leaders are banking on the ‘PDA’ (Pichda, Dalit, Alpsankhyak) formula to repeat this success in 2027. Amidst accusations and counter-allegations—with the SP reminding voters of controversial remarks made by BJP figures regarding religious icons—the battle lines for Uttar Pradesh are being drawn once again around the intersection of faith, governance, and electoral legacy.
