The mythological story of Budha Pradosh Vrat
In ancient times, a young man was newly married. Just two days after the wedding, his wife left for her parents' home. After a few days, the young man went to his in-laws' house to bring her back. Coincidentally, that day was a Wednesday. When he proposed sending his wife away, his in-laws and others explained that according to the scriptures, sending a girl away on a Wednesday is considered inauspicious. But the young man remained adamant and refused to listen. Finally, with a heavy heart, his parents were forced to send their daughter away with him.
The husband and wife were returning to their town. As they arrived outside the town, the wife felt intense thirst. The young man left his wife under the shade of a tree and went in search of water. When he returned a short while later with water, he was stunned by the sight. He saw his wife laughing and talking with another man and drinking from his own water pot.
When the young man, seething with anger, approached them, he couldn't believe his eyes. The other man's appearance was exactly like his! The wife, seeing the two men's resemblance, was confused as to who her real husband was. A heated argument and fight broke out between the two lookalikes. Seeing the commotion, a large crowd gathered, and even the city police arrived. Everyone was astonished by the sight of the lookalikes.
When the soldiers asked the woman who her real husband was, she was confused. Surrounded by this terrible crisis and humiliation, the real husband realized his mistake. He folded his hands and prayed to Lord Shiva with a true heart, "Oh Mahadev! Please protect me. I made a grave mistake today by not listening to my in-laws and sending my wife away on Wednesday. Please forgive me, I will never make such a mistake again."
Lord Shiva is incredibly merciful. As soon as the young man's prayer was answered, the other look-alike suddenly vanished into thin air. This miracle astonished everyone present. The couple thanked Lord Shiva profusely and returned home safely.
It is said that from that day onwards, the husband and wife started observing Pradosh fast with full rules and devotion throughout their life and their life became happy.
