In this way, Lord Vishnu was freed from being imprisoned in the depths of the ocean due to the anger of Mother Kamakhya.
News Topical, Digital Desk : The Kamakhya Temple of Assam is related to the mythological story of Goddess Sati, the first wife of Lord Shiva. This Kamakhya Temple worships her in a Shakti Peetha unlike other temples.
They say this is where a part of Sati's vagina fell. Most people know these facts about Maa Kamakhya Dham, but there is also a less known story associated with Lord Vishnu and Maa Kamakhya.
The pride of Lord Shri Hari and the leela of Mother Kamakhya
According to the Kalki Purana, Lord Vishnu while travelling through the sky on Garuda visited Goddess Kamakhya on Nilachal Mountain. And coming to the mountain he abused the goddess, and said to Garuda, "Go, go.
Mother Kamakhya, who is Mahamaya herself and mother of all creation, stopped Garuda in his flight in the sky, between earth and heaven. By the power of Mother Kamakhya, Garuda was unable to advance or retreat, as if tied to a mountain.
Lord Vishnu was enraged at seeing Garuda thus tied up and attempted to move the mountain. He tried to raise it with both his hands but Lord Vishnu, the lord of all worlds, could not move it one inch.
Mother Kamakhya was enraged to see Lord Vishnu, the Lord of all the worlds helpless before the mountain. She tied Lord Vishnu and Garuda with a sacred thread. Then she threw Lord Vishnu into the mouth of a crocodile . The crocodile was a sea creature which lived in the Black Sea . He was drowned in the depths of the ocean .
There Mahamaya tied Lord Vishnu to a rock in the sea. Lord Vishnu tried with all his might to free himself, but he could not reach the surface of the water. The Goddess stopped his movement and his senses, and he was left, with Garuda, tied to the ocean floor as a normal creature would be.
The creator god Brahma saw Lord Vishnu in the depths of the ocean but could not bring him up. Then came Indra and the other gods, But even they could not succeed. They also became the prey of the illusion of Mother Kamakhya.
Then Lord Shiva intervened and brought relief.
Then Brihaspati came before Lord Shiva and asked him where had gone the gods, Brahma, Vishnu and others. Lord Shiva said , due to disrespecting the goddess Mahamaya , Lord Vishnu was caught in the ocean by the spell of goddess Mahamaya .
Lord Shiva told Brihaspati Dev, “Lord Brahma and other gods went to seek help, but they are bound by Lord Vishnu. He warned that anyone who went there without him would be bound in the same way, and would never be able to return. Then Lord Shiva released Lord Brahma and the other Gods one by one.
Lord Shiva along with Brihaspati Devi came to the gods. Lord Vishnu said “Garuda had tried to move the Neelkuta Mountain and Goddess Kamakhya was angry. The gods were helpless. He prayed Lord Shiva and asked him to take them to Goddess Kamakhya so that they could be saved from her punishment.
Lord Vishnu took pity on Lord Shiva and showed the divine armor of Goddess Kamakhya. He put it on and became free from all bondages. Brihaspati too was free in her presence. Lord Shiva said, "Any one who wears this armor is also free from the bondage.
This armor protects the parts of the body with her names. Her seed syllables protect the bones, metals, body fluids and all the directions. Repeat once; kills fear and disease. Recitation of it a hundred times gives the devotee a divine vision of the Mother's abode." In battle spoken, it at once sets a man free from slavery.

Then Lord Brahma, Lord Vishnu, Indra and other gods appeared from the depth of the ocean by the grace of Mahamaya wearing divine armor. Then they all worshipped the Goddess and reached the Neelkuta Mountain.
When Lord Vishnu saw her, he praised Mother Kameshwari. Mother Kamakhya is the Adi Shakti, the incarnation of nature itself and the source of water, earth and all creation. She possesses supreme knowledge, by which the individual is given salvation.
Then Goddess Kamakhya appeared before Lord Vishnu and said. She ordered Lord Vishnu, Brahma and all the gods to bathe and drink the waters of the Goddess's sacred Yonikund. She said this would take away their egos and they could ride Garuda back to heaven.
Following the order of Mother Kamakhya, Lord Vishnu and Brahma bathed in the holy water flowing from her yoni-kunda and drank. The other gods did likewise. The gods, having shed their egos, returned to heaven, filled with joy.
