The controversy erupted following a public address by Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge in Haldwani, after which certain elements allegedly conducted a symbolic purification ceremony at the venue. The issue has since snowballed into a major political flashpoint. A day prior to Priyanka Gandhi's statement, senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi also addressed a press conference, accusing members aligned with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) of orchestrating the ritual, demanding strict legal action under the SC/ST Act.
Priyanka Gandhi Targets Prime Minister Modi Over Inaction
Taking to the social media platform X, Priyanka Gandhi expressed deep outrage, stating that the alleged purification ritual reflects a highly condemnable and regressive mindset. She criticized authorities for inaction, pointing out that despite 20 days passing since the incident, no formal legal proceedings have been initiated against the perpetrators.
Directing her appeal to the central government, Gandhi asserted that if Prime Minister Modi genuinely respects the Indian Constitution, he must ensure that an FIR is formally registered and that those responsible face prosecution under the law. The controversy continues to draw sharp reactions from opposition leaders demanding accountability and protection for marginalized communities against caste-based discrimination.
