Hindu Groups Hit Streets in Karnataka Demanding Strict Action on Private Schools

A brewing controversy over holiday schedules has prompted pro-Hindu organizations to take to the streets across Karnataka, demanding swift punitive intervention from the Department of School Education against private educational institutions. Delegations from the Sri Ram Sena-Karnataka and the Hindu Jana Jagruthi Vedike lodged formal protest memorandums with the Deputy Director of Public Instruction (DDPI) and School Education authorities in Ramanagara and Bengaluru South districts. The organizations have alleged that multiple private unassisted schools are blatantly defying government directives by conducting regular academic classes and scheduling mid-term examinations right through the sanctioned Dasara festival period.

Government Mandate vs School Operations: The 19-Day Vacation Dispute

According to representations submitted by the outfits, the Karnataka State Government formally notified an official 19-day festive break for all recognized primary, secondary schools, and pre-university colleges, spanning from October 3 to October 21, 2026, to celebrate Dussehra (Navratri) festivities. The activist groups have argued that instead of honoring this state-notified calendar, several private school administrations are operating campus sessions under the pretext of syllabus completion while reserving extended winter vacations for Christmas in December. This shift, they contended, directly infringes on students' cultural observances, drawing widespread resentment, formal complaints, and pushback from concerned parents and local resident welfare associations.

Demand for Immediate Enforcement and Departmental Scrutiny

Highlighting that the failure to implement state-ordered holiday mandates undermines administrative authority, the protesting groups urged education directors to dispatch inspection teams and issue immediate compliance notices to non-compliant private school managements. They emphasized that state holiday notifications apply uniformly across all affiliated boards operating within territorial jurisdiction, demanding that punitive regulatory action be taken if schools persist with classroom attendance during the sanctioned festive window. The district education offices have assured the delegations that the memorandums will be reviewed to determine compliance with departmental guidelines.
