Heavy Rain Alert in 23 States: Landslide Warning in Hills as IMD Issues Red Signals
Weather conditions across a vast swathe of the Indian subcontinent are slated for a sharp shift within the next 15 hours, according to the latest predictive bulletin released by the India Meteorological Department (IMD). The weather agency has warned that 23 states—including Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, and Rajasthan—could witness intense localized spells of torrential rain, accompanied by widespread thunderstorms, cloud-to-ground lightning, and gusty surface winds across southern and northeastern regions. Authorities have placed state disaster management teams on alert to monitor waterlogging in vulnerable low-lying belts and ensure civic response units are positioned ahead of peak squall activity.
Northeast on High Alert: Landslide Threats and Heavy Spells in Arunachal Pradesh
The meteorological bureau highlighted severe alerts for the eastern Himalayan belt, warning of isolated heavy downpours over Arunachal Pradesh. Concurrently, scattered to fairly widespread showers will sweep across Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Sikkim, and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. High-velocity thunderstorms and severe lightning strikes are expected to hit the Assam-Meghalaya and Nagaland-Manipur-Mizoram-Tripura corridors, prompting authorities to sound landslide warnings across steep terrain and mountain highway stretches prone to slope destabilization.
Peninsular Storm Warnings: Gusty Winds up to 50 kmph to Batter South India
Peninsular India is bracing for heightened convective storm activity over the weekend as moisture-laden troughs converge over southern coastal belts. Thunderstorms accompanied by gusty wind speeds ranging from 40 to 50 kmph are forecast across Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal. Furthermore, sustained squalls blowing at 30 to 40 kmph will sweep coastal stretches of Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, Mahe, and Lakshadweep, with strong surface winds buffeting coastal districts. The IMD indicated that southern rainfall will escalate progressively between October 4 and 6, with intense downpours slated for Kerala, Mahe, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Coastal Karnataka.
Dry Skies over Delhi-NCR Today; Monsoon Retreat Accelerates Across North India
In contrast to the southern and eastern alerts, dry conditions will prevail over the National Capital Region and northwestern plains today, with no rainfall forecast for Delhi, Haryana, and Chandigarh through Saturday. However, an approaching western system is anticipated to renew precipitation activity in these areas starting October 6, with Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh slated for significant wet spells from October 5 to October 8. Meanwhile, the southwest monsoon continues its withdrawal line across north and central zones, with conditions favorable for complete retreat over residual pockets of Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand within the next 24 hours.
