News Topical, Digital Desk : People often ask why it is taking so long to formulate a trade deal, but it is normal for such international agreements to take a long time,” Gor said. Sergio Gor on India US Trade deal: “ There has been a long-standing discussion between India and the US on a much-awaited trade deal. The biggest question is why this agreement hasn't happened already. Sergio Gor, the US ambassador to India now, has said that only a few issues remain to be agreed upon between the two countries explaining the reason. "We have only a few outstanding issues to discuss," he said, adding that he was optimistic a deal could be reached in the next few weeks or months.
“The recent meeting in New Delhi with US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer and Union Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal was very positive,” Sergio Gor told IANS. Most of the work now is finalizing the agreement, which the two countries will sign, he said. "There are only a few issues left and the talks are moving in the right direction," he added.

Gore, explaining why the trade deal was delayed, said people often ask why the trade deal is taking so long but it is normal for international agreements of this kind to take a long time. India and the United States have been working on the deal for about a year and a half but talks between the United States and the European Union on a trade deal have been going on for nearly 20 years without being finalized, he said. "The India-US trade deal is moving in the right direction and both countries are very positive about it," he said.

The US ambassador described the meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Donald Trump on the sidelines of the G-7 summit in France as "very positive". The two leaders talked for over an hour about trade, defence and a range of other important issues, he said. Gore said the meeting dealt with a number of issues that will further cement the ties between the two nations. “I hope we will be able to make some big announcements in the next few weeks,” he said.

Hailing India's potential, Gore shared his six-month India experience saying he had been visiting different parts of the country and witnessed India's fast-growing potential. "There is a huge scope of cooperation between India and the US," he said.
