Tamil Nadu Assembly Passes Resolution Making 'Tamil Thai Vazhthu' Mandatory at All Government Functions
In a significant move championing regional heritage, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay introduced a landmark resolution in the State Legislative Assembly on Monday, making the official state song 'Tamil Thai Vazhthu' mandatory at the beginning of all official government functions, educational institutions, universities, public sector undertakings, and public programs across the state. Stepping up to the floor of the House, CM Vijay firmly declared that his administration would never compromise on the linguistic and cultural rights of Tamil Nadu, appealing to all political parties to set aside ideological differences and unite in honor of the mother tongue.

Delivering an emotional and impassioned address in the Assembly, Chief Minister Vijay emphasized that the regional language transcends ordinary communication to form the core identity of the state's populace. "Our mother tongue is as sacred as our mother. Tamil is not just a language, but also our life and our emotions. Tamil means pride, Tamil means strength," he stated, adding that the mere mention of Tamil unites the entire state. Urging unanimous backing, the Chief Minister stressed that giving pride of place to 'Tamil Thai Vazhthu' is an undeniable state right, asserting that there should be no political debate or hesitation regarding its mandatory recitation.

The legislative measure received swift and overwhelming backing from major political factions across the aisle, securing formal support from both the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK). Historically, Tamil Nadu first institutionalized the song's performance through a government order on November 23, 1970, before formally designating it as the official state anthem on December 12, 2021. Derived from the classic 1891 play Manonmaniyam by P. Sundaram Pillai, the hymn honors Mother Tamil as a deity of knowledge and linguistic heritage.
