Karnataka Tragedy: Bodies of Mother and Five Children Found in Vijayapura Lake, Police Suspect Suicide
In a heartbreaking incident that has sent shockwaves across Karnataka, the lifeless bodies of a mother and her five young children were recovered from Bhootanal Lake on the outskirts of Vijayapura on Wednesday. The grim discovery has created widespread panic and sorrow in the region, with local authorities launching an extensive probe into the tragic event.
Discovery of the Bodies and Initial Police Findings
According to Vijayapura Superintendent of Police (SP) Laxman Nimbargi, local authorities received emergency information around 8:45 AM on Wednesday regarding bodies floating in Bhootanal Lake. Police personnel, alongside Fire and Emergency Services teams, rushed to the scene to retrieve the bodies and initiate identification procedures.
The deceased have been identified as 35-year-old Shobha Jalgeri and her five children: Vidya (14), Suvarna (14), Gaudesh (10), Sanika (7), and Vikas (5). The family hailed from Toravi village within the Tikota taluk of Vijayapura district.
Family Feud and Missing Persons Report
Preliminary investigations revealed that a missing person report for Shobha and the children had been filed by her husband, Bhimrai, at the Vijayapura Rural Police Station just two days prior. Police inquiries uncovered that Shobha had a heated argument with her husband on Monday over preparations for Shravan Somvar. During the dispute, she reportedly threatened to leave the house and end her life along with the children.
Tracing the sequence of events, investigators found that Shobha left home around 6:00 AM on Monday with four of her children. She then traveled to a local residential school to pick up her hearing-impaired son, bringing all five children with her. Because she left her mobile phone behind at home, tracking their real-time movements proved extremely difficult for law enforcement.
Ongoing Investigation and Post-Mortem Examination
While initial findings strongly point toward a suspected mass suicide stemming from domestic discord, police emphasize that the exact cause and manner of death will only be confirmed following a detailed autopsy. Senior officials, including Deputy Superintendent of Police Nagaraj and Adarsh Nagar police personnel, secured the site immediately after the recovery, sending all six bodies for post-mortem examinations. Authorities continue to gather evidence and interview relatives to piece together the full circumstances surrounding this profound family tragedy.
