Relentless monsoon downpours continue to wreak havoc across India, paralyzing normal life, triggering severe river floods, and prompting high-alert warnings across multiple states. From the collapse of a vital bridge in Uttar Pradesh's Chitrakoot and rising floodwaters in Bihar to widespread alerts spanning 18 states, adverse weather conditions are testing disaster response systems as heavy rains persist.

Uttar Pradesh: Mandakini River Bridge Collapses and Flood Threat in 58 Districts

In Uttar Pradesh, the fury of nature was starkly visible in Chitrakoot, where the overflowing Mandakini River washed away the crucial Ramghat bridge, leaving nearby residential areas submerged under up to 5 feet of thick mud and debris. The Meteorological Department has issued warnings for moderate to heavy rain accompanied by thunderstorms across 58 districts of eastern and western Uttar Pradesh. Heavy downpours are expected to persist in eastern UP, while lightning and squally winds remain active through early September.

Bihar on High Alert: Floods from Nepal, River Erosion, and Heavy Rain in 6 Districts

Bihar is facing a mounting flood crisis as relentless rains coincide with massive water discharges from the Kosi and Gandak barrages following upstream heavy rainfall in Nepal.

• River Danger Levels: The water level of the Gandak River at Dumaria Ghat in Bagaha has surged above the danger mark, while severe erosion along the Ganges in Bhagalpur washed away eight houses in Sabour.

• District Alerts: A total of 15 districts have been placed on high alert, with the IMD warning of extremely heavy rainfall, thunder, and lightning in six specific districts: Aurangabad, Bhabua, Buxar, Rohtas, Gaya, and Nawada.

Madhya Pradesh and 18-State Nationwide Rain Alert

The fallout from overflowing rivers has spilled into neighboring Madhya Pradesh, where rising waters from the Mandakini triggered flood-like conditions in Satna, Chitrakoot, Tikamgarh, Chhatarpur, and Panna. Consequently, schools in Satna have been ordered closed. Districts including Sidhi, Rewa, Maihar, and Mandla remain under active alerts for lightning and gusty winds reaching up to 40 km/h.

Nationwide, the Meteorological Department has issued light to moderate rain and thunderstorm alerts across 18 states today, encompassing Delhi, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh (where a yellow alert runs until September 3), Jammu and Kashmir, Jharkhand, West Bengal, Odisha, Chhattisgarh, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Kerala, and the northeastern states. Authorities have advised citizens in affected regions to stay clear of swollen water bodies and take shelter in safe, permanent structures.
