Since the beginning of Hindi cinema, many actresses have played the role of "mother" on the big screen and have subsequently been offered similar roles. At times they have had to mother actors six to seventeen years their senior. Here are the details of these actresses who have played mothers to actors who are older than them.

Sheeba Chaddha

Sheeba Chaddha is one of the finest actresses in Hindi cinema and she was Guddu Pandit’s mother in ‘Mirzapur’. Sheeba played Shah Rukh Khan and Anushka Sharma’s mother in the 2018 film “Zero”. Sheeba was 46 when she did this role, while Shah Rukh was seven years older. King Khan was 53 years old at the time.

Mona Singh

Mona Singh is one of those actresses who have played the role of mother to an actor older than her. In the 2022 film "Laal Singh Chaddha", she played the role of mother to Aamir Khan, Gurpreet Kaur Chaddha, who teaches her son to face challenges. Mona played this role when she was just 40 while Aamir was 57 at that time. Between the two there was a 17 year age difference.

Sonali Kulkarni

Sonali Kulkarni is a popular actress of Marathi, Hindi and Tamil cinema and has also portrayed Salman Khan’s mother in 2019-starrer “Bharat” which also featured Katrina Kaif and Disha Patani. In real life, Sonali is nine years younger than Salman.

Richa Chaddha

Actress Richa Chadha, who has given a number of successful films as the lead actress, is among those who has played the role of an older actor’s mother on screen. But she played the mother of Nawazuddin Siddiqui, who is 10 years older than her in Anurag Kashyap’s “Gangs of Wasseypur”. Richa was only 25-26 years old when she did this role.

Shefali Shah (German)

In an interview, Shefali Shah opened up about how uncomfortable it was for her to play the mother of actor Akshay Kumar, who is six years older than her. At the age of 33, in 2005, she played the wife of Amitabh Bachchan, who was older to her, and also the mother of Akshay, who was 38 at that time, in the film “Waqt”.


Nargis -

Nargis Dutt was at the peak of her career playing a mother’s role. She played the mother of Sunil Dutt and Rajendra Kumar in the 1957 film Mother India. Rajendra Kumar was two years older than her and Sunil Dutt was just five days older.

Rakhi has also been a favourite on-screen mother having played the role of a mother in more than half a dozen movies. In the 1982 film "Shakti", Rakhi played the mother of the megastar of the century, Amitabh Bachchan, who was five years older than her. This was the same Rakhi who was also Amitabh’s girlfriend in couple of films.

Reema Lagoo -

Reema Lagoo has also been a favorite onscreen mother. She has been the mother to many actors in many major movies. She played Rishi Kapoor's mother in the 1993 film 'Shriman Aashiq'. Reema Lagoo did this role when she was just 36, and Rishi Kapoor was 41. Five years lay between them.
