News Topical, Digital Desk : Who doesn't like crispy and golden brown snacks? Potato chips, crispy pakoras or slightly overcooked roti - the taste of all these often attracts us.
Such food is a silent killer
When we fry, roast or bake potatoes, roti, bread or any carbohydrate rich food at high temperature, a special chemical called Acrylamide is formed in it. This is the same chemical about which Dr. Tarang Krishna is warning. This acrylamide can prove to be a 'silent killer' for your body.
According to the doctor, this chemical can directly damage your DNA. Our DNA is the blueprint for the formation and functioning of the body's cells. When DNA is damaged, the cells start growing irregularly and this is where serious diseases like cancer can start.
So should we give up eating crispy food?
This doesn't mean you should give up eating crisps altogether. The main thing is balance and awareness.
- Don't overcook: Don't cook your food until it's too brown or black. Cook potato chips, french fries, toast, or baked biscuits until they're a light golden color.
- Pay attention to the temperature: Avoid frying or roasting at high temperatures . Cooking at low heat is safer.
- Soaking in water: Soaking potatoes in water for some time before frying can reduce the level of acrylamide to some extent.
- Variety of foods: Don't rely only on fried foods. Include more fruits, vegetables, pulses and whole grains in your diet.
- Boil or steam instead of baking: If possible, boiling or steaming is a healthier option than frying or baking.
Remember, taste is important, but health is paramount. Be aware of what is coming on your plate and by making small changes in your eating habits, you can live a healthy life.
