News Topical, Digital Desk : Hair Straightening: Nowadays, girls and women resort to treatments like hair straightening to make their hair straight, soft, and shiny. These salon treatments offer immediate results, but the chemicals used can cause serious long-term health problems. In the rush to look beautiful, their side effects are often overlooked.

Israel's shocking incident

A serious case has recently emerged from Israel, where a 17-year-old girl was hospitalized after undergoing hair straightening. According to reports, the treatment caused severe kidney damage. The girl was admitted to Shaare Zedek Medical Center with acute kidney failure.

This isn't the first case. Last month, a 25-year-old woman was hospitalized with kidney damage after hair straightening. The continued emergence of such cases has raised questions about whether hair straightening is truly safe.

What symptoms were seen

According to the hospital report, shortly after the hair straightening treatment, the girl began experiencing persistent vomiting, nausea, and severe headaches. When her condition worsened, she was immediately taken to the hospital, where tests revealed that her kidneys were severely affected.

The relationship between hair straightening and kidney damage

This risk was confirmed in a 2023 study by Professor Linda Shavit and Dr. Alon Benaya, head of the Nephrology Institute. The study examined the cases of 26 women, aged 14 to 58, who had no previous history of serious illness but suddenly presented to the hospital with acute kidney failure.

The researchers found that all of these women had undergone hair straightening treatments based on glyoxylic acid, a chemical believed to be harmful to the kidneys.

How to protect yourself

Although hair products containing glyoxylic acid have been banned in many countries, it's still important to be cautious. Before using any chemical product, be sure to thoroughly understand its side effects.

Avoid applying chemicals directly to the scalp or roots of hair during hair straightening. Maintain a distance of at least 1.5 centimeters. Furthermore, both hairdressers and clients should ensure the product is not overheated and that all instructions are followed strictly.
