New Closing Auction Timings and VWAP Expiry Settlement Effective December 7
In a landmark regulatory intervention aimed at curtailing last-minute market manipulation and improving price discovery across Dalal Street, capital markets regulator Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) has notified a comprehensive circular restructuring the Closing Auction Session (CAS), derivative contract trading hours, and expiry day settlement formulas for equity derivatives. Set to take effect on Monday, December 7, 2026, the updated framework establishes a standardized 10-minute CAS window across domestic bourses, decouples futures and options (F&O) expiry settlement prices from closing auction volatility, and establishes precise execution clocks for index and stock derivatives. To ensure seamless market-wide integration across the National Stock Exchange (NSE), Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), and clearing corporations, the market regulator has mandated that all market infrastructure institutions formulate and publish detailed Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) within seven days of the circular's issuance.
Inside the 10-Minute Closing Auction Session: Staggered Execution and Random System Closures
Under the newly notified framework, the Closing Auction Session will operate from 3:30 PM to 3:40 PM across all equity trading sessions, replacing ad-hoc volatility with a disciplined, multi-phase order-matching sequence. The first minute, between 3:30 PM and 3:31 PM, is reserved exclusively for system transition and fixing the baseline reference price for participating securities. The primary order entry window commences at 3:31 PM and runs until 3:36 PM, during which institutional and retail participants can submit both Limit Orders and Market Orders. Starting at 3:36 PM until the end of the session at 3:40 PM, the system will accept only Limit Orders, effectively barring unhedged market orders to prevent artificial pricing spikes. Crucially, to deter algorithmic gaming and tactical order cancellations during the final moments of trade, SEBI has mandated that the actual order-entry closure will trigger dynamically and randomly between 3:38 PM and 3:40 PM via automated exchange algorithms, ensuring transparent and unmanipulated terminal pricing.
Decoupling Expiry from CAS: Why Settlement Shifts to a 3:00 PM to 3:30 PM VWAP Calculation
A central pillar of the regulatory overhaul addresses the long-standing vulnerability of contract settlement manipulation during high-volume expiry sessions. SEBI has officially terminated the practice of anchoring the final settlement price of expiring stock and index derivatives to the closing prices established during the post-market closing auction. Instead, the final settlement price for expiring contracts will now be derived strictly from the Volume-Weighted Average Price (VWAP) recorded during the final 30 minutes of continuous regular trading, spanning 3:00 PM to 3:30 PM. For expiring index derivative contracts, the settlement benchmark will be computed using the weighted VWAP of the index's underlying constituent equities over this identical half-hour continuous trading block. By relying on volume-weighted transaction density across an active 30-minute window rather than thin auction pricing, the regulator aims to neutralize speculative squeeze plays, eliminate sudden settlement distortion, and safeguard market stability.
Revised Derivatives Clocks: 3:30 PM Expiry Cutoffs and Continued Stock Derivative Windows
The new operational guidelines also establish clear bifurcations in trading hours between standard days and contract expiry days for the derivatives segment. On routine non-expiry trading days, transactions in index derivative contracts will continue until 3:45 PM, providing market participants with extended risk management and hedging flexibility. However, on designated contract expiration days, trading in index derivative contracts reaching final maturity will halt promptly at 3:30 PM, matching the conclusion of normal market hours. In contrast, stock derivatives will continue trading until 3:45 PM even on contract expiry days, allowing market participants extended bandwidth to square off cash-settled or physical-delivery equity obligations without disrupting broad-market index valuations. With clearing corporations and exchanges now working against a strict seven-day timeline to adapt risk management architecture and technical gateways, institutional desks, algorithmic brokerages, and retail traders across India are preparing for one of the most consequential operational transformations of the financial trading calendar.
