Net Profit Surges 56% to ₹1,912 Crore as Bad Loans Drop to Record Lows
State-run lender Indian Overseas Bank (IOB) delivered an outstanding financial scorecard for the second quarter of fiscal year 2026–27 on Monday, October 26, 2026, posting an impressive 55.95 percent year-on-year surge in standalone net profit to ₹1,912 crore. The Chennai-headquartered public sector bank had logged a bottom-line profit of ₹1,226 crore in the corresponding quarter of the previous fiscal year, with current-quarter profitability catalyzed by strong core lending expansion, disciplined operational efficiency, and significant improvements in balance sheet quality. Underscoring robust core operating momentum, the bank's Net Interest Income (NII)—the difference between the interest earned on advances and the interest paid on customer deposits—witnessed a strong 26.4 percent year-on-year expansion, jumping to ₹3,867 crore compared to ₹3,059 crore registered during the July–September window of the previous fiscal cycle.
Asset Quality Strengthens as Gross NPAs Drop to 1.19% Despite Higher Provisioning
The bank recorded decisive progress on its credit stress matrix, with headline asset quality indicators demonstrating healthy sequential improvement across the September quarter. Indian Overseas Bank's Gross Non-Performing Assets (GNPA) ratio contracted to 1.19 percent from 1.33 percent logged at the end of the previous quarter, reflecting sustained recoveries, upgrades, and tighter underwriting standards across corporate and retail lending verticals. Simultaneously, Net Non-Performing Assets (NNPA) improved to 0.16 percent compared to 0.18 percent in the previous sequential quarter, reinforcing the lender's position among the cleanest balance sheets within the public sector banking fraternity. To further insulate its loan book against potential macroeconomic uncertainties, the bank prudently enhanced its credit risk provisions to ₹950 crore for the quarter, stepping up from ₹834 crore earmarked in the preceding quarter, thereby maintaining a solid capital safety buffer against emerging asset slippages.
