BSE and NSE to Shut for 3 Consecutive Days Next Week Starting October 2

Equity investors, day traders, and institutional market participants on Dalal Street should prepare their trading schedules for a compressed workweek ahead. India's premier stock exchanges, the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) and the National Stock Exchange (NSE), will remain completely closed for trading on Friday, October 2, 2026, in observance of Mahatma Gandhi Jayanti. Because this statutory national holiday falls directly on a Friday, it creates an uninterrupted three-day long weekend closure for domestic financial markets spanning Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Normal market operations across the equity cash, equity derivatives, currency derivatives, and interest rate futures segments will take place only over four active trading sessions next week, running from Monday, September 28 through Thursday, October 1.

Asian Bourses Also Announce Multiple Holiday Closures Next Week

The upcoming trading curtailment is not confined to India, as several major Asia-Pacific stock exchanges have also scheduled extended market closures for cultural and national observances. The Taiwan Stock Exchange will suspend trading operations on Monday, September 28, to commemorate Teachers' Day; combined with its prior closure on September 25 for the Mid-Autumn Festival, Taiwanese bourses will mark a four-session operational pause before resuming live trade on Tuesday, September 29. In mainland China, both the Shanghai Stock Exchange and the Shenzhen Stock Exchange will halt operations starting Thursday, October 1, for the Golden Week National Day celebrations, with Shanghai markets remaining closed straight through October 7 before reopening on October 8. Concurrently, the Hong Kong Stock Exchange will observe a trading suspension on Thursday, October 1, reflecting regional holiday schedules that could dampen Asia-wide market turnover.

Friday Market Rebound: Sensex and Nifty Recover After Weekly Slide

Prior to heading into the final stretch of September trade, Indian benchmark indices snapped a prolonged losing run by staging a welcome recovery during Friday's trading session. The 30-share BSE Sensex advanced 315.20 points, or 0.43 percent, to settle at 73,895.74 after swinging between an intraday low of 73,477.77 and a peak of 73,968.05, with 19 constituents finishing in the green. The broader 50-share NSE Nifty gained 77.40 points, or 0.34 percent, closing at 23,140.50 with 34 advancing counters against 15 declines. In the broader indices, the BSE Smallcap gauge managed a modest 0.11 percent uptick, while the BSE Midcap index slipped 0.62 percent. Despite Friday’s late recovery, both headline gauges logged painful weekly deficits, with the Sensex retreating 399.22 points (down 0.53 percent) and the Nifty shedding 205.90 points (down 0.88 percent) over the five-day trading period, signaling that traders will approach next week's shortened four-day schedule with disciplined risk management.
