He had found success with Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Ramleela, but before that, he had already failed several films. One such film was Ranbir Kapoor's Bombay Velvet.
When Bombay Velvet was being made, Ranveer Singh wasn't a major star yet . Shooting began in September, but he became a star with the release of Ramleela in November. Anurag Kashyap wrote and directed the film.
Ranveer Singh was the first choice for Bombay Velvet
When Anurag Kashyap was writing the film, he had Ranveer Singh in mind for the lead role. The film was initially intended to be made on a low budget. However, it was later sold to a major studio, which decided to make the film on a larger budget, but on the condition that Ranbir Kapoor be cast as the lead.
How did Ranbir Kapoor get Bombay Velvet?
Anurag Kashyap himself revealed in an interview with the Indian Express that Ranveer Singh was the original choice for Bombay Velvet, not Ranbir. He said, “When I originally wrote it, it was for Ranveer Singh. He was newer then, but everyone sold it as Ranbir and the actor changed. It took me at least a year to understand that.
Anurag was upset after the film flopped.
Bombay Velvet proved to be a major box office disaster. The film received mixed reviews. Anurag Kashyap revealed that after the film's failure, he felt hesitant to meet Anushka Sharma and Ranbir Kapoor . He said, "I was battling internal problems. So I had to get over that and make a very small film. I was very focused on Raman Raghav, but gradually I think we drifted apart." It is said that Ranbir Kapoor was very disappointed with the failure of Bombay Velvet.
