A secret buried for 85 years has been revealed during renovations at the White House. Whose problems will increase?

News Topical, Digital Desk : After the Pearl Harbor attack in 1941, then-US President Franklin D. Roosevelt ordered the construction of a secret bunker in the White House. A new section of the East Wing was built over it, but the bunker's location was never publicly disclosed.

Now, 80 years later, the East Wing is under construction again. A grand ballroom is being built for President Donald Trump, but the real secret lies beneath. The old bunker has been demolished and a new one is being built.

The bunker will be equipped with new technology

Now, the facility is being updated with new technology to address changing threats. At a meeting of the National Capital Planning Commission, White House official Joshua Fisher said the project will strengthen "mission-critical functions" and enhance security, CNN reported.

What is the past of this bunker?

This bunker was formerly a submarine-like safe haven. It housed the Presidential Emergency Operations Center (PEOC), where the president and his staff could operate in case of an emergency. It was used for several important occasions, such as the 9/11 attacks where Vice President Dick Cheney was evacuated. Recently, former President Joe Biden's trip to Ukraine was also planned here.

It was originally a bomb shelter, but over time, it underwent various changes. One had to go down from the East Wing and cross a large vault door, which housed beds, food, water, and communication systems.

The PEOC was a robust command center capable of withstanding even a nuclear attack. It worked in conjunction with the Situation Room, where the Situation Room handled day-to-day operations, while the PEOC was for emergencies only.

The Presidents' Connection

According to historian Bill Seal, Roosevelt visited this bunker only once. After that, it became a tradition for every new president to visit it on his first day, but its importance has diminished in the last 20 years. Now, this space appears tomb-like, but it is being modified to meet new needs.
