Skandmata fasting story

According to the legend, there was a demon named Tarakasur. He pleased Brahma Ji by doing penance. He asked Brahma Ji for a boon to make himself immortal. After this, Brahma Ji explained to him that whoever is born has to die. Tarakasur got disappointed with this and said to Brahma Ji that Lord, please make me die at the hands of Mahadev's son. He did this because he thought that if Lord Shiva never gets married, then how will he have a son. Therefore, he will never die in life.

After this, he started torturing people. The gods and goddesses got upset with his atrocities and approached Lord Shiva. They prayed to Lord Shiva to free them from Tarakasura. In this situation, Lord Shiva married Parvati and became the father of Kartikeya. After growing up, Kartikeya killed Tarakasura. Lord Kartikeya's mother is Skandamata.
