These days the public is rediscovering Punjabi singer Amar Singh Chamkila. The reason for this is Imtiaz Ali's film 'Chamkila' in which Diljit Dosanjh is playing the role of Amar Singh Chamkila. This film was released on Netflix on Friday.
Chamkila was the most popular star in the world of Punjabi music in the 1980s. At that time, he was the biggest seller of cassettes and records among Punjabi singers. Chamkila was murdered in 1988 at the age of just 27, the mystery of which has not been solved to date.
Chamkila, who was once the biggest music star of his time, was forgotten by the public. But now after a film has been made on him, people are getting to know about him again. Now such an incident related to Chamkila's popularity has come to light, which will surprise even the Bollywood fans.
According to
India Today, Chamkila's friend Swarn Sivia had told in an old interview that his friend looked as handsome as Amitabh Bachchan. Swarna had said that 'the man was like a shining diamond.' He had said, 'Amar Singh Chamkila was very much loved by the people in Punjab. People know Chamkila only as a singer. Very few people know that he was a man like a diamond. Once in 1986, when he came to my house, he saw that my mother was ill. He gave me Rs 10,000, which was a big deal at that time.
When Chamkila rejected the film with Sridevi,
Swarna Sivia had told in her interview that film star Sridevi was also a fan of Chamkila and wanted to do a film with her. Sivia told this, 'Sridevi was a fan of Amar Singh Chamkila. He had asked him to become his hero in a film. But he said- 'I cannot speak Hindi.' He had also offered him training in Hindi within a month. But he refused saying that 'I will incur a loss of Rs 10 lakh in that one month.' Sridevi was ready to do a Punjabi film with him, but that did not happen.
Imtiaz Ali's film 'Chamkila' is streaming on Netflix. Along with Diljit, Parineeti Chopra is also in this film based on the life of Amar Singh Chamkila. She played the role of Chamkila's duet partner, his wife Amarjot Kaur. Along with him, Amarjot and two more people from his music group also lost their lives in the attack on Chamkila.
