External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, currently in the United States for the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly, held a high-stakes bilateral meeting with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio in New York. The discussions centered on expanding the India-US comprehensive strategic partnership, navigating complex regional priorities, and directly addressing India's core economic and energy security concerns on the global stage.

Raising India's Concerns Over the 100% Tariff Bill

A critical focus of the meeting involved New Delhi's firm stance against proposed US legislative measures targeting trade partners of Moscow and Tehran. EAM Jaishankar formally conveyed India's position regarding the Sanctioning Russia and Iran Act (SRIA). The proposed bill contemplates sweeping economic penalties, including potential tariffs of up to 100 percent on major global buyers of Russian energy resources.

Given India's vital sovereign imperatives in maintaining steady energy imports and long-standing defense cooperation, Jaishankar articulated New Delhi's perspective directly to Secretary Rubio.
