Yogi Govt to Light 7,500 Cow Shelters on Diwali, Boosting Rural Incomes

The Uttar Pradesh government led by Yogi Adityanath has launched the 'Ek Diya Gaumata Ke Naam' campaign for Diwali 2026, illuminating over 7,500 cow shelters across the state while driving rural self-reliance by setting up dedicated stalls for cow-based products crafted by women self-help groups.

The Uttar Pradesh government, led by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, has rolled out a statewide social initiative titled "Ek Diya Gaumata Ke Naam" (One Lamp in the Name of Mother Cow) ahead of Deepavali, bridging festive celebration with community-driven cattle conservation and rural self-reliance. Under this mass outreach initiative, more than 7,500 registered cow shelters and facilities for destitute cattle across the state's 75 districts will be illuminated with sacred earthen lamps during the festival of lights. Beyond the symbolic illumination, the campaign is designed to mobilize village communities, encourage local youth to take formal pledges for cow welfare, and unlock sustainable livelihood channels for rural women and smallholder farmers through the systematic promotion and commercialization of eco-friendly cow-based products.

Empowering Rural Women: SHG Stalls and Festive Cow-Based Gift Hampers

Detailing the economic vision behind the initiative, Uttar Pradesh Livestock and Dairy Development Minister Dharampal Singh emphasized that the state administration is utilizing the festive window to strengthen the grassroots agrarian economy. Dedicated exhibition and retail stalls will be established across urban centers, administrative headquarters, and rural market squares to showcase an array of value-added cow products—including organic cow-dung diyas, dhoop batti, natural cleansers, and festive decor—manufactured by women associated with rural Self-Help Groups (SHGs). To stimulate consumer demand and encourage ethical, sustainable purchasing during the festive rush, the department is curating specialized gift hampers featuring these indigenous products, ensuring that festive spending directly translates into household income and economic independence for rural female artisans.

Transforming Gaushalas into Community Hubs: Cultural Pride Meets Self-Reliance

Highlighting the cultural and structural impact of the mission, Uttar Pradesh Cow Service Commission (Gau Seva Aayog) Chairman Shyam Bihari Gupta noted that organizing Diwali celebrations alongside villagers inside gaushalas will fundamentally transition these shelters from simple animal shelters into dynamic centers of community participation and environmental education. The campaign conducts structured awareness sessions directed at village youth and women, educating them on the long-term utility of indigenous cattle and the commercial potential of organic bovine derivatives in zero-budget natural farming. By uniting civilizational reverence with tangible economic empowerment, the "Ek Diya Gaumata Ke Naam" movement aims to build lasting public ownership around animal welfare while demonstrating how traditional agrarian practices can sustainably support the rural economy throughout Uttar Pradesh.
