The ambitious health project directly addresses the urgent demand for immediate life-saving care for road mishap victims, polytrauma cases, and critical medical emergencies arriving from the state capital and surrounding regions. To expedite execution, authorities have already earmarked and cleared approximately 16,000 square meters of prime institutional land along the high-speed Shaheed Path corridor, establishing an essential emergency transit corridor capable of treating high-velocity collision cases without urban transit delays.

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath officially announced the project sanction while presiding over the institute’s sixth foundation day celebrations on Sunday, issuing direct instructions to administrative departments to fast-track the bidding and construction phases. Expanding the institute’s tertiary healthcare capabilities during the event, the Chief Minister also inaugurated a specialized Centre for Organ Transplant, an advanced digital cardiac catheterization laboratory (Cath Lab), and an expanded 45-bed emergency ward designed to handle sudden casualty surges. The Chief Minister highlighted that the strategic placement of the modern trauma complex along the bustling Shaheed Path arterial highway will transform the facility into a vital healthcare lifeline for severely injured patients originating from across Lucknow, central districts, and the extensive agrarian belt of Eastern Uttar Pradesh.
Easing Overburdened KGMU: Establishing UP’s Second Apex Level-1 Trauma Care Facility
The approval marks a critical turning point in regional casualty management, as King George’s Medical University (KGMU) Trauma Centre currently serves as the only operational Level-1 emergency facility in the state. Operating consistently at double its sanctioned bed capacity, KGMU’s daily patient overflow frequently necessitates emergency patient referrals to secondary district hospitals, causing catastrophic delays during the critical "Golden Hour" of trauma intervention. By adding 350 specialized beds, the Lohia Institute will become Uttar Pradesh’s second Level-1 apex facility, specifically outfitted to handle catastrophic polytrauma, severe neurological trauma, complex spinal cord damage, blunt abdominal ruptures, and multi-organ structural trauma through unified multi-disciplinary intervention teams.
Comprehensive Emergency Architecture: Modular OTs, High-Capacity ICUs, and Political Reflections
Addressing the foundation day gathering, Deputy Chief Minister and Health Minister Brajesh Pathak emphasized that the Lohia Institute embodies the self-reliant philosophy of socialist ideologue Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia and Jayaprakash Narayan, noting their lifelong ideological fight against institutional dynastic politics.
