68-Crore Twin Roads Along Godhoiya Drain to Decongest 20 Wards
In a significant infrastructure push for eastern Uttar Pradesh, the city of Gorakhpur is set to witness the construction of two 3.75-meter-wide parallel roads along both banks of the newly overhauled Godhoiya drain at an estimated cost of ₹68 crore. Designed to run directly adjacent to the drain’s reinforced cement concrete (RCC) boundary walls, the dual-flank roadway will be built atop an advanced underground intercepting sewer network laid by the Uttar Pradesh Jal Nigam, utilizing a 4.25-meter right-of-way acquired on either side. With the formal foundation stone laying ceremony scheduled for next month, the Public Works Department (PWD) is mobilizing resources to begin immediate construction, targeting a swift completion window of four to five months to dramatically improve intra-city mobility for over 2.5 lakh urban households.
Dual-Flank Mobility and Safety: PWD to Install Streetlights, Crash Buffers, and Clear Encroachments
The surface transit corridor is being engineered to accommodate two-way local vehicular movement while integrating commuter safety infrastructure along the entire 9.7-kilometer water channel. To prevent vehicles from accidentally colliding with the drainage structure, the PWD is incorporating high-impact guardrails, reinforced safety buffers, and comprehensive street lighting designed to provide secure conditions for motorists as well as local residents stepping out for morning and evening strolls. The route establishes an uninterrupted passage originating behind Baba Raghav Das (BRD) Medical College, traversing Harsevakpur Numbers 1 and 2, navigating the Jail Bypass, and terminating at the scenic banks of Ramgarhtal. Addressing illegal land reuse, civil administration authorities have warned that unauthorized structures rebuilt on acquired and compensated plots will be systematically razed, with PWD engineers directed to commence paving across completely cleared corridors before tackling contested, encroached sectors.
₹495-Crore Drain Transformation: Upgrading Ramgarhtal Ecology and Civic Sanitation Across 20 Wards
The upcoming road network represents the urban transit component of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s flagship ₹495.24 crore Godhoiya drain overhaul, an ambitious ecological rejuvenation venture operational since April 1, 2023, to eliminate persistent monsoon waterlogging across 20 municipal wards. Alongside the surface roadworks, Jal Nigam will launch the project's second phase next month, linking household drainage networks to a massive 17.94-kilometer intercepting sewer conduit supported by 15 main pumping stations and 18 bridges and culverts. This integrated subterranean network will divert raw domestic sewage from approximately 250,000 dwellings away from local streets and into a dedicated 38 million liters per day (MLD) sewage treatment plant (STP), ensuring that thoroughly treated, purified water flows into the heritage waters of Ramgarhtal lake to safeguard the region’s ecological balance.
