Tensions ran high across the Kirnapur region in Madhya Pradesh's Balaghat district on Tuesday as a massive demonstration organized by the Marar Mali community took a violent turn, culminating in intense stone-pelting outside the local police station. The confrontation left at least 16 individuals wounded, including seven police personnel and senior supervisory officers who were caught in the hail of projectiles. Agitated demonstrators assembled in large numbers to protest the alleged custodial assault, humiliation, and stripping of a pregnant woman and her husband inside the police station premises earlier this month. As the crowd swelled, an aggressive faction surged forward, forcing open the heavy outer perimeter gates of the Kiranpur police station and attempting to breach the compound, prompting law enforcement units to deploy anti-riot measures and fire tear gas canisters to disperse the agitated mob.

Violent Clashes Outside Kiranpur Station: SDOP, Police Inspector, and Female Constables Injured

The confrontation escalated rapidly when dialogue attempts broke down and stones were hurled toward the duty officers stationed at the entrance. Among those sustaining blunt force injuries were Sub-Divisional Officer of Police (SDOP) Deepak Tomar, Inspector Jitendra Chauhan, officer Shailendra Patel, the SDOP’s official driver Alok, Head Constable Varsha, and female constables Ambika and Avisha. The injured personnel and wounded civilian demonstrators were immediately taken to the Kirnapur Primary Health Center for emergency medical care, where primary triage and dressing were completed. Due to the severity of injuries sustained by select personnel, several officers were subsequently referred to a multi-specialty medical facility in neighboring Gondia, Maharashtra, for advanced radiographic examination and surgical monitoring. Following the skirmish, Balaghat Superintendent of Police Aditya Mishra rushed additional armed detachments to the spot, initiated perimeter de-escalation protocols, and engaged community representatives while field intelligence teams began analyzing CCTV and smartphone footage to identify the primary instigators behind the violence.

The unrest traces back to September 2, when Kiranpur police rounded up Kailash Choudhary and his pregnant wife, Savitri Choudhary, residents of Timkitola village in the Mundesara Panchayat, on suspicion of involvement in a local theft incident. The community has alleged that male police personnel inside the station subjected the pregnant woman to horrific physical torture, forcibly stripping her and thrashing her until she lost consciousness, leaving severe bruises and visible contusions across her body. Outrage reached a tipping point on September 7 when distress calls culminated in family members carrying the ailing woman on a cot straight to the District Collector’s administrative office to demand justice and urgent medical intervention. Taking immediate cognizance of the grievous complaint, the district administration and the Superintendent of Police ordered an internal inquiry, resulting in the immediate suspension of four police personnel, including the Town Inspector (TI), though local community organizations continued demanding harsher statutory charges against the accused officers.
