Speaking at a diplomatic briefing in New Delhi on Wednesday, German Ambassador to India Jasper Wieck identified the long-pending India-European Union Free Trade Agreement (FTA), skilled labor mobility, and military co-production as immediate operational priorities. The ambassador expressed strong confidence that formal negotiations on the comprehensive trade pact could reach fruition by the end of 2026, providing a significant boost to bilateral trade flows and supply-chain diversification.
€8-Billion Project-75I Submarine Deal Anchors Defense Collaboration
A major pillar of the expanding strategic partnership centers on maritime defense procurement. Ambassador Wieck highlighted that a prospective multi-billion-euro naval agreement for constructing six advanced conventional submarines will serve as a transformative milestone in bilateral security ties. Governed under India's strategic Project-75I (P-75I) program, the proposed contract—valued at approximately 8 billion euros—involves a collaborative manufacturing partnership between Germany's ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems (TKMS) and India's state-owned Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL). Beyond undersea capabilities, the envoy emphasized wide-ranging scope for collaborative ventures in unmanned aerial systems (drones), cyber defense architectures, precision missile systems, and advanced military-grade optical sensors.
Managing Supply Chain Disruptions and Expanding Labor Migration
Addressing the macroeconomic headwinds unleashed by the prolonged Russia-Ukraine conflict, Ambassador Wieck noted the severe inflationary shocks exerted on global energy networks, grain corridors, and chemical fertilizer availability. To mitigate such systemic vulnerabilities, both nations are strengthening reliable manufacturing links and easing regulatory pathways for human capital. Addressing Indian student concerns over visa processing backlogs, the envoy confirmed that the German embassy is actively implementing structural solutions to accelerate approvals, reiterating Germany's commitment to welcome Indian students, software professionals, and certified skilled workers into its industrial workforce.
