Drone Platoons, Massive Underground Bunkers & Elite Strike Drills to Counter China

In a sweeping operational transition to secure India’s high-altitude frontiers against aggressive military posturing by China, the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) has established dedicated drone platoons across every frontline border battalion stationed along the 3,488-kilometer Line of Actual Control (LAC). Announcing the major security overhaul during an investiture ceremony at the force’s operational base in Alwar, Rajasthan, ITBP Director General Shatrujeet Singh Kapoor asserted that relying on conventional warfare doctrines is no longer viable against China, emphasizing that asymmetric technologies have fundamentally changed modern combat. Highlighting real-world battlefields such as the protracted Russia-Ukraine conflict—where unmanned aerial systems inflict heavy attrition of 10,000 to 15,000 military casualties each month on a global superpower—Kapoor underscored that the 95,000-strong mountain force is aggressively integrating cutting-edge unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), counter-drone electronic defenses, and specialized tactical modules to dominate the harsh Himalayan terrain.

Drones Over Conventional Arms: ₹4,000-Crore Modernization Plan and Drone Platoons

To cement technological superiority at forward outposts, the Union Ministry of Home Affairs has granted in-principle approval to a comprehensive ₹4,000-crore modernization plan for the ITBP, which allocates an unprecedented ₹1,000 crore exclusively toward acquiring advanced drone and anti-drone defense systems. This massive financial blueprint builds on an immediate ₹400-crore capital fund already disbursed by the central government, with 70 percent of that budget directly channeled toward upgrading the force's aerial reconnaissance, automated surveillance, and precision drone strike capabilities. By equipping every border battalion with organic drone units, frontline commanders can conduct round-the-clock reconnaissance across blind glaciated valleys, track unauthorized movement behind opposing lines without exposing troops, and intercept enemy drones attempting to conduct electronic surveillance over Indian positions.

Subterranean Fortifications and 'Strike' Training: Transforming ITBP into an Elite Mountain Force

Alongside aerial modernization, the ITBP is executing an extensive defensive engineering overhaul by constructing fortified underground shelters and blast-resistant bunkers on a massive scale along vulnerable forward axes, directly addressing the vulnerability of above-ground structures to long-range artillery and aerial bombardment. To prepare troops for physical confrontation akin to the 2020 Galwan Valley clash, the force has developed a high-intensity close-quarter combat module known as "Strike" training, with plans to certify the entire 95,000-strong force under this rigorous syllabus by the end of 2027. Reinforced by the newly formed 'Shaurya Commandos' unit slated for permanent deployment across all border formations, these combined infrastructural, tactical, and technological upgrades are designed to transform the ITBP into an agile, self-contained high-altitude fighting force capable of maintaining strategic dominance along the contested northern border.
